Description: The Deputy Safety Manager must be familiar with safety and occupational health principles, practices, procedures, OSHA, federal safety and occupational health standards. Must be able to plan, organize, direct, operate, execute inspect and/or evaluate a safety program for a construction safety program.
- Maintains a comprehensive knowledge of Company specific Health, Safety & Security (HSS) standards, programs and goals.
- Manages and trains subordinates assigned to her/his area on HSS activities, duties may include the calculation and control of HSS budgets, staffing requirements and schedules, preparation of certification/classification programs and the preparation of the supporting HSS documents.
- Liaise as necessary between the Company, clients, insurance carriers and regulatory agencies in order to provide assistance and resolution in regard to audits, remedial actions, workers compensation claims and other HSS related issues.
- Makes decisions independently on engineering/scientific problems and methods relating to HSS using advanced techniques, modifications and extensions of theories.
- Runs gap analyses to identify and address program gaps that may occur between Company practices, client requirements, and regulatory/legislative requirements.
- Supervises the collection, protection and data storage related to project incidents that may result in litigation.
- Promotes and fosters HSS standards and goals with programs throughout the company and /or project to ensure a safe and productive work environment.
- Manages, trains and supervises HSS employees, inspectors, consultants and other employees working in the HSS department.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated commitment to safety; with the ability to identify safety improvement opportunities is a must.
- Bachelors degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Safety Engineering, or related discipline or subject matter knowledge experience, skills and abilities acquired through work experience.
- If no bachelors degree, 10 plus years experience in a construction company with occupational safety responsibility required.
- Strong leadership and training skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with audiences that include but are not limited to management, coworkers, clients, vendors, contractors, and visitors.
- Ability to learn and apply knowledge of applicable local, state/province, and federal/national statutes and guidelines.
- Attention to detail and work in a time-conscious and time-effective manner.
- Demonstrated sustained high-level performance in safety & environmental functions with strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to simultaneously handle a variety of safety & environmental projects and assignments and to bring an effective approach to the solution of technical objectives.
- Ability to maintain security and confidentiality of sensitive documents and personnel information.
- Valid drivers license.
- Computer literate and the use of Microsoft programs to include Excel, Word, Outlook, and the internet.
- Safety Certifications required or the ability to acquire these certifications: OSHA 500/30 card, MOT Certification, Safety certifications from an accredited organization (CSP, ASP, SMP), First Aid,/CPR Certification.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Organizational Relationships:
- Reports directly to Senior Safety Manager.
Work Environment
- Recurring field trips outside of the office to the field project is required.
