Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The primary purpose of Cogeneration Systems is the generation of steam to the various buildings on the University campus and to the UNC Hospitals. Steam is critical to the operations of the University and UNC Hospitals. It is used for heating, cooling, domestic hot water, sterilization of surgical instrument, distilled water production, food preparation and dish washing. Cogeneration Systems also generates electricity as a byproduct of the steam generation. It can presently supply about 30 percent of the peak campus electrical load. Cogeneration Systems is part of UNC Energy Services.
Position Summary
Perform preventive maintenance on a variety of equipment; install and repair electrical systems and components from the load side of the service transformer to the last device, assist lead person with small renovation and construction projects, respond to daily emergency calls as applicable, and keep lead person and supervisor well informed of daily work progress.
This position will perform scheduled electrical maintenance on existing building systems. Effectively use a wide range of tools, technical manuals, electrical blueprints, and various electrical meters to make repairs and installations. Performs preventive maintenance to various campus electrical systems and complete associated paperwork documenting preventive maintenance. Installs new electrical components per customer request, responds to daily emergency calls as needed and keeps lead person and supervisor informed on status of projects.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Ability to read and interpret complex schematic drawings/blueprints on building systems and equipment.
Must possess a valid NC Driver's License.
Ability to read and interpret construction blueprints and detailed job descriptions, create a materials take-off list and complete purchase requisitions for materials, tools and accessories. Requires application of planning and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, teamwork, good communication skills, and adherence to safety rules and requirements. Must have a valid NC Driver's license for this position.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Demonstrated experience in the electrical field, ability to read and interpret complex electrical schematics and blueprints, and experience working under NFPA70E requirements and the National Electrical Code.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Ability to work on hands and knees and stand for extended periods of time; ability to navigate stairs, move objects weighing at least 50 lbs.; climb and work from ladders, boom lifts and scaffolding up to 60 ft.; and ability to wear personal protective equipment required for the specific job, including but not limited to safety harnesses, fall protection, respirators, face masks or face shields, and protective gloves and safety shoes. All duties to be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
