JOB DESCRIPTION:

Primary Purpose: To maintain the District's transportation vehicles.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Major Responsibilities and Duties

  • Perform major repair work on school vehicles (example: engine overhauls, brakes).
  • Use tools and equipment safely and properly.
  • Perform minor body work and welding.
  • Conduct state inspection on all buses.
  • Participate in assigned training programs.
  • Help conduct a preventive maintenance program and maintain records.
  • When possible, correct unsafe conditions that may exist in the work area that could cause an accident. Any conditions that are not correctable by you are to be reported to the supervisor immediately.
  • Know and practice the proper safety procedures in operating machinery and equipment as required for the job.
  • Know and practice safety techniques in lifting, climbing and performing other job duties.
  • Attendance at work is an essential function.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor or designee.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum Experience:

  • Experience in general mechanics

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Certification:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Valid Texas commercial driver's license
  • Eligible for coverage under the District's vehicle insurance program

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Mechanic I skills
  • Ability to interpret and carry out instructions
  • Ability to read and understand instructions for transportation and safety procedures

OTHER INFORMATION:

Equipment Used: Mechanical tools. Working Conditions: Mental/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over), pushing, reaching above shoulders, use of fingers, walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, repeated bending, climbing, operation of motor vehicle, specific visual requirement, depth perception, ability to distinguish basic colors, specific hearing requirement. Outside and inside; excessive heat, cold and/or humidity; excessive dampness or chilling, constant noise, dust; exposure to silica, asbestos, etc.; fumes, smoke, or gases; solvents (degreasing agents), grease and oils, unusual fatigue factors, protracted or irregular hours.
