OUR POSITION
The Associate Engineer I/II is responsible for supporting the planning, design, and execution of transportation by engineering standards and regulatory requirements. Under direction, this position performs technical reviews of plans and reports, conducts field inspections, ensures compliance with contractor and consultant requirements, and prepares thorough project documentation. Serving as a key liaison between City departments, external developers, engineers, and the community, the Associate Engineer plays an essential role in upholding quality, safety, and fiscal accountability across engineering initiatives. This position demands analytical expertise, clear communication, and the ability to manage multiple priorities with professionalism and sound judgment.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate for the Associate Engineer position will have a solid understanding of engineering principles and practices related to transportation.They should be skilled in reviewing traffic plans, including signing and striping, highway design, detour plans, and temporary traffic control. A successful candidate in the transportation division will be familiar with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), tackle real-world traffic control challenges; and contribute effectively to transportation safety and efficiency engineering calculations, reviewing development plans, coordinating construction inspections, and overseeing developer-driven projects throughout the entitlement, design, and contribute to the overall roadway safety for our residents. They will adopt a detail-oriented and organized approach to maintain accurate project documentation, ensuring safety and quality.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Associate Engineer I: Is the journey-level, non-registered engineering class in the engineering class series. Under direction, incumbents are responsible for performing a variety of public works engineering activities, including initiating communications and providing reliable information to engineering management regarding public works projects, compliance review and inspection and reviewing the work of design consultants and contractors to ensure that projects are completed within budget and on time. Incumbents in this class shall promote automatically to Associate Engineer II once a professional engineering license is obtained.
Associate Engineer II: Is the registered professional engineering-level in the engineering class series. Under direction, incumbents are responsible for performing a variety of public works engineering activities, including managing assigned projects, initiating communications and providing reliable information to engineering management regarding public works projects, compliance review, inspection and reviewing the work of design consultants and contractors to ensure that projects are completed on time within budget, and other duties as assigned.
Associate Engineer II is further distinguished from Senior Engineer, P.E. in that incumbents in the latter class are responsible for performing the most complex professional engineering work requiring a substantial level of professional training and experience.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A bachelor's degree in civil engineering or electrical engineering, or equivalent related work experience. Three years of progressively responsible land development design and field experience or capital construction project engineering or electrical engineering experience.
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
A valid and current registration as a Professional Civil or Electrical Engineer with the California State Licensing Board.
ABOUT THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
The Public Works department is responsible for public works administration, city engineering, maintenance of public facilities located within the street right-of-way, design and construction of City-built capital improvements, and administration of traffic facilities, providing electric service to new development in residential, commercial and industrial areas, and related activities.
