Nature of Work

Skilled work in the operation of cranes and other heavy equipment used for trash handling in the Department of Solid Waste.

Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of various types of cranes and other heavy equipment used in handling and removing waste and debris from the City streets. An employee of this class may be expected to operate any of the abovementioned specialized types of equipment, and is responsible for properly operating such equipment so as not to damage it or other property. Employees are expected to exercise considerable judgment and skill in carrying out general instructions and in conforming to operating practices set up for this work. Supervision is received from a Sanitation Supervisor who assigns and inspects work in progress.

Essential Functions

Operates trash crane at various locations throughout the City in picking up rubbish and loading it into trucks for removal to the disposal pit, often under heavy traffic conditions.

Moves trash crane from one pick up location to another and locates unit in best position for most efficient pick up of rubbish.

May coordinate a small group of Waste Collectors in assembling trash for most efficient use of equipment.

Operates equipment in a restricted area within close tolerances.

Performs minor mechanical maintenance work on equipment. Lubricates equipment in accordance with the prescribed lubrication schedule.

Makes minor adjustments and repairs on machinery, including adjusting crane brakes and changing cables when required. Cleans auxiliary equipment with air hose.

Uses assigned tablet to complete daily route.

Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Requirements

Two (2) years experience in the operation of crane or other heavy equipment.

A valid State of Florida Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B) must be submitted to the Department of Human Resources at time of application and maintained valid throughout employment in the classification.

Successful completion of the Crane Operator Training Program offered by the City of Miami, Department of Solid Waste will be required before the end of the probationary period.

SPECIAL NOTES:

Must be willing to work evenings, nights and weekends on a regular basis.

As a condition of employment, the DMV records of those selected for hire must be submitted during the pre-employment process at the candidate's expense.
