Position Summary:
The Grain Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and accurate handling of grain and related products. This role involves operating equipment to receive, clean, dry, store, and ship grain, while maintaining quality standards and adhering to safety, environmental, and operational protocols. The Grain Operator works both independently and as part of a team to ensure smooth facility operations, especially during peak harvest seasons.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate grain handling equipment such as conveyors, elevators, bins, dryers, and scales.
- Receive, unload, and inspect incoming grain deliveries from trucks or railcars for quality and documentation accuracy.
- Load grain into outbound trucks or railcars per customer orders and facility standards.
- Monitor and maintain grain quality through regular inspections for temperature, moisture, pests, and spoilage.
- Record inventory movement and maintain accurate transaction logs.
- Perform regular facility and equipment maintenance, including lubrication, adjustments, and minor repairs.
- Ensure cleanliness and orderliness of the facility by performing housekeeping tasks (sweeping, shoveling, cleaning pits and equipment).
- Assist with inventory management, blending, and storage planning.
- Follow and enforce all safety, environmental, and operational protocols.
- Support seasonal operations, including extended hours during harvest or peak shipping periods.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED.
- Ability to lift 50+ pounds and perform physical labor.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and overtime during peak seasons.
- Prior experience in agriculture, grain handling, or grain elevator operations.
- Experience operating heavy equipment (e.g., skid steers, front-end loaders, forklifts).
- Must be eligible to work in the U.S.
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot and operate basic machinery.
- Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions precisely.
- Dependable, self-motivated, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
- Basic math and recordkeeping abilities.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Commitment to safety, with a solid understanding of PPE, lockout/tagout, and confined space entry procedures.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with grain grading standards and quality testing (e.g., moisture testing).
- OSHA safety training or certification.
- Basic computer proficiency for inventory tracking and reporting systems.
- Fluency in both English and Spanish
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in outdoor and indoor environments, often in dusty, noisy, and weather-exposed conditions.
- Requires regular climbing of ladders and stairs, working at heights, and in confined spaces.
- Exposure to grain dust, machinery, and moving equipment.
- Long hours and shift work are expected during harvest and peak operational periods.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required (hard hats, goggles, gloves, respirators as applicable).
