Overview

The City of Alexandria's Department of Project Implementation is looking for a Civil Engineer II. The incumbent in this position performs civil engineering and construction management work and provides guidance and assistance to technical staff in the field and office. Work in this position involves the application of professional engineering knowledge. Assignments are broad in scope with an opportunity for the use of independent judgment and professional skills in the design, and construction of public works projects. Work is performed under general supervision of a Construction Manager or Portfolio Manager.

The Opportunities and Key Responsibilities

  • Researches and recommends materials and construction methods, development of construction specifications, computation of project quantities, and preparation of supporting documentation.
  • Perform constructability reviews.
  • Prepare presentation materials and/or notification letters to be distributed for the community impacted by up-coming construction projects.
  • Schedule pre-construction meetings and prepare agendas and minutes of meetings.
  • Schedule construction progress meetings and prepare meeting agendas and minutes of meetings.
  • Resolves construction issues and escalates accordingly when needed.
  • Monitor progress of projects against schedule and budget.
  • Reviews submittals, requests for information and actions accordingly
  • Conducts engineering inspections and reconciles quantities with the contractor.
  • Reviews monthly payment applications and provide recommendations for processing or revisions.
  • May investigate, resolve and report routine public works inquiries and requests.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

About the Department

The Department of Project Implementation (DPI) is responsible for the implementation of municipal infrastructure projects including intersection improvements, stormwater infrastructure, sanitary sewer infrastructure, flood mitigation and park improvements. DPI staff promote excellence in project management and sound stewardship of public trust. The Department is currently managing 103 active infrastructure projects with a total capital improvement program value of approximately $832 million. The Department coordinates and plans complex, multi-departmental projects such as the Waterfront Small Area Plan Implementation and the Landmark Mall Redevelopment projects. DPI is dedicated to continuous improvement and industry best practices and is committed to the continued professional development of staff members. Minimum & Additional Requirements

A Bachelor's degree in a Civil Engineering and three years of professional work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Proven experience in planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring design and construction projects.
  • Proven experience in project management roles, with a track record of successful project delivery.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively interact with other designers, contractors, team members, stakeholders including the public.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and best practices related to construction management, quality assurance, and safety protocols.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify issues and implement effective solutions in a fast-paced environment.

CCM or CMIT designation highly preferred.
