A-Level Pipe Layer Road Construction

The A-Level Pipe Layer is a senior-level crew member responsible for leading and performing the installation of underground utility systems, such as storm drainage, sanitary sewer, and water lines,on road construction projects. This role ensures all pipework is laid according to engineering plans, at correct grades and specifications, and in compliance with safety and quality standards. The A-Level Pipe Layer works closely with the Foreman and supervises less experienced pipe layers and laborers.

Key Responsibilities

Read and interpret blueprints, grade stakes, and pipe laser settings for accurate pipe installation on road projects.

Install various types of pipe (RCP, PVC, HDPE, ductile iron) for storm drains, water mains, and sewer systems.

Ensure proper pipe alignment, elevation, and slope using lasers, levels, and transits.

Set manholes, catch basins, valve boxes, and related structures.

Supervise and mentor B- and C-level pipe layers and general laborers.

Coordinate closely with equipment operators to ensure safe trenching and material handling.

Inspect trenches and bedding to ensure safety and proper compaction.

Perform quality checks on completed sections of pipeline and structures.

Ensure work adheres to DOT, municipal, or private development specifications.

Communicate progress, issues, and changes with site Foreman or Superintendent.

Maintain job site safety and follow all OSHA, company, and DOT guidelines.

Required Skills and Qualifications

Minimum 35 years of experience in pipe laying for road or heavy civil construction.

Proven ability to install large-diameter pipes to grade using lasers and levels.

Solid understanding of road construction utility installation processes and standards.

Strong teamwork and leadership skills with the ability to direct a small crew.

Physical stamina and ability to work outdoors in varying weather and site conditions.

Familiarity with OSHA trench safety, confined space protocols, and PPE usage.

Preferred Education & Certifications

High School Diploma or GED.

OSHA 10 or 30 Certification.

Trench Safety/Competent Person Certification (highly preferred).

Valid Drivers License; CDL a plus.

Flagging or traffic control certification (for work near live roads) may be a benefit.

Work Conditions

Outdoor work in active construction zones with heavy equipment.

Exposure to weather, dirt, noise, and potential traffic hazards.

Requires standing, walking, bending, lifting (50100 lbs), and working in trenches.
