POSITION SUMMARY:
- To oversee the operation of the Transportation Department's shop
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
- Associate Degree in Auto Mechanics/ASE Certified/Master Mechanic (preferred)
- Transportation Professional Certification through TAPT/TASBT (preferred)
- OBD II and DOT Inspection Certification or willing to obtain
- Texas Railroad Commission Propane Certification or willing to obtain
- Forklift Operator Certification or willing to obtain
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Demonstrate proficiency in the operation and management of the district's computerized fleet management system
- Must have a working knowledge of vehicular maintenance
- Demonstrate ability to provide quality staff development fleet/technical training areas
- Must possess and demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills necessary to communicate successfully with others
- Advanced knowledge of diesel and fuel-engineered maintenance and repair of school buses
- Able to operate a wide range of shop equipment
- Able to work under pressure and prioritize effectively
- Knowledge of record-keeping and office procedures
- Must have maintained an exemplary driving record per DISD safe driving incentive guidelines
- Must have and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with all appropriate endorsements and classifications and all other required licenses, permits, and certifications
- Must have and maintain a satisfactory driving and criminal history background as determined by the Texas Department of Public Safety that reflects a professional driver and which meets all contractual, local, state, and federal requirements
- Must demonstrate diplomacy and flexibility in dealing with internal/external publics of the school district
- Complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision and mistakes
- Take initiative in identifying and working on needed non-driving tasks
- Follow District and Transportation Department policies and procedures
- Able to work irregular hours as needed, including working on altered shifts when necessary
- Proficient in verbal and written communication
Experience:
- Minimum of five (5) years experience as a shop foreman/fleet manager/lead mechanic in a public school district (preferred)
- Two years of supervisory experience in transportation operations (preferred)
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for all operational activities of the Transportation Shop, which include supervising all shop personnel, assigning daily work to mechanics, monitoring work projects of mechanics, and ensuring a safe and clean environment through compliance
- Manage the use of the district's computer fleet management system
- Develop and produce fleet performance and operating cost indicators and information
- Perform inspections, diagnoses, and repairs of buses and other transportation support vehicles
- Order parts and supplies and keep associated records
- Report to the Director of Transportation and/or Shop Business Manager for review of major maintenance projects and decisions.
- Maintain records as directed
- Supervise assigned employees and assist in performing various human resource functions, including the recommendation of employment, disciplinary action, performance appraisal, and staff development
- Ensure that all vehicles meet local, state, and federal standards
- Maintain a daily shop work log and current vehicle status board
- Review, approve, and assign all shop work orders and driver concerns
- Maintain and administer the preventative maintenance program
- Meet regularly with the Director of Transportation, Shop Business Manager, and dispatchers to ensure their needs are met
- Monitor expenditures with budgetary limitations
- Submit budget recommendations yearly to the Director of Transportation
- Perform general maintenance, clean-up, custodial, security, and related tasks in case of a facility disaster or other emergency
- Schedule and/or develop and implement quality training for shop and other department personnel
- Prepare bids for purchasing
- Respond to after-hours emergency calls as needed
- Attend professional development activities/programs to keep abreast of developments and innovations in the area of transportation
- Work as a bus driver or bus monitor as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation
