Performs repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in construction of highways/bridges and inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Essential Duties: Equipment Mechanic I or II Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems. Handles and disposes of environmentally hazardous materials in accordance with federal and state laws. Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights and parking lights. Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system. Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges. Orders, drives to picks up and delivers parts, materials, tools, and operates equipment and vehicles to include heavy equipment. Performs acetylene and electric arc welding repairs. Performs emergency spot repairs. Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required moves items related to these activities. Troubleshoots, tests and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Equipment Mechanic II - Responsibilities in addition to those listed above Trains less experienced technicians.
