Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of a Senior Transportation Engineer or Senior Engineering Geologist or Senior Landscape Architect, the incumbent will provide environmental engineering support concerning water quality, air quality, noise, and hazardous waste. The employee performs a variety of tasks related to the determination, mitigation, cleanup, and avoidance of known or potential soil and groundwater contamination, investigations of potential underground infrastructure, and hazardous waste handling and disposal requirements. Conduct field surveys and surface sampling to locate, evaluate and make recommendations regarding contaminated media and paleontological resources in relationship to capital improvement projects. Minor Program projects, maintenance activities and facilities, and expansion or relinquishment of Caltrans' operating right of way. Acts as Task Manager of hazardous waste task orders as related to project development and construction activities and District facility management. The duties of Engineering Geologist will typically be more difficult than the duties of other classifications. The duties of a licensed Engineering Geologist will typically be more difficult and periodically require exercise of professional judgment, including the use of their engineering seal. Travel is required. Must possess a valid California Driver's License when using a state owned or leased vehicle. Registration as a Professional Geologist is preferred.

Working Conditions

Position located at 500 S. Main Street, Bishop, Inyo County.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans's evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee's designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
