Make Ready Designer

Job Description

This hybrid role combines field data collection with office-based design work. The ideal candidate will have experience in telecom infrastructure design, utility pole assessments, and working with data collection platforms such as IKE or similar. You will be responsible for gathering field data, analyzing site conditions, and producing accurate telecom infrastructure designs.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field surveys of telecom infrastructure, including utility poles, fiber routes, and right-of-way conditions.
  • Use IKE or similar platforms (e.g., SPIDA, O-Calc, GIS tools) to collect and document field data.
  • Develop 'Make Ready' engineering designs to support fiber and broadband deployment.
  • Interpret telecom construction standards and apply them to field conditions.
  • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and permitting teams to ensure design accuracy and compliance.
  • Maintain detailed records of field data, design files, and project documentation.
  • Travel to job sites 50% and work in the office in Syracuse 50%.
  • Acquire a working knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), national engineering standards, utility construction standards, and best industry engineering practices.
  • Maintain production and quality of projects, including field data, photographs, engineering analysis, reports, and databases.
  • Prepare and modify electrical and roadway drawings, specifications, calculations, charts, graphs, and construction drawing packages.
  • Perform various field technical services for the operation, inspection, and maintenance of electrical distribution systems.
  • Collect field data utilizing laptop computers, tablet devices, GPS, and other electronic devices.
  • Develop a working knowledge of telephone, cable, and other communication facilities.
  • Operate necessary equipment to take measurements on utility poles and mid-span facilities.
  • Provide assistance with storm damage assessments to OH and UG distribution structures and equipment.
  • Communicate effectively in formal and informal situations, both verbally and in writing.
Essential Skills
  • Experience in telecom field work or infrastructure design (1-3 years).
  • Familiarity with 'Make Ready' processes and NESC standards (at least 6 months).
  • Experience with IKE or similar data collection and design platforms.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently in the field and collaboratively in the office.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Associates Degree in Electrical Power Technology, Telecommunications, or a related field.
  • Experience in 3rd Party Make Ready - telecom.
  • Broadband design or OSP design experience.
  • Knowledge of the National Joint Utilities Notification system (NJUNS) preferred.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr.
