Engineering Technician - Redwood Energy
Essential Duties:
We are seeking a skilled Engineering Technician with expertise in soldering and printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) rework to join our team. As an early member of a new engineering team, you will play a key role in supporting Hardware Engineering for Energy Products at Redwood Materials. The ideal candidate will have hands-on expertise working with high-voltage and high-current components, performing precision soldering, rework, and modifications on power converter and inverter boards, as well as supporting prototype builds and engineering evaluations. This role requires strong knowledge of high-voltage safety practices and is integral to ensuring quality and reliability in our power electronic products.
Responsibilities Will Include:
- Perform precision soldering and desoldering of power electronics components, including through-hole, high-current bus bars, and fine-pitch SMD devices (down to 0201 and BGA)
- Rework and modify PCBs and power modules based on engineering change orders and failure analysis results
- Safely handle high-voltage and high-current assemblies following electrical safety and ESD protocols
- Apply lockout/tagout (LOTO), proper PPE, and safe working clearances when working with energized or high-energy assemblies
- Conduct visual and functional inspection of PCBAs to ensure adherence to IPC-A-610 and IPC-7711/7721 standards
- Assist engineers with prototype power electronics builds, thermal evaluation hardware modifications, and field-return rework
- Support integration of large passive components (capacitors, inductors, bus capacitors) and power semiconductors (IGBTs, MOSFETs, SiC/GaN devices)
- Maintain detailed records of all rework and modifications for traceability
- Contribute to continuous improvement of soldering, rework, and safety processes focused on high-voltage applications
Desired Qualifications:
- Associate's degree in Electronics Technology or equivalent experience preferred
- 2+ years of electronics assembly and soldering experience, ideally in power electronics, automotive, renewable energy, or related industries
- Demonstrated experience working safely with high-voltage systems and compliance with electrical safety protocols
- Familiarity with high-voltage PCB layouts, creepage/clearance rules, and conformal coating rework a plus
- Proficiency in fine-pitch SMD soldering and heavy copper through-hole component rework
- Ability to read schematics and assembly drawings
- Hands-on experience with soldering irons, hot air rework stations, preheaters, and microscopes
- A get-it-done attitude; no job is too big or too small
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform the essential job functions consistent safely and successfully with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards
- Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards
- Ability to work with small components under a microscope for extended periods
- Manual dexterity for precision soldering and handling heavy copper assemblies
- Occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs
Working Conditions:
- Flexible working in different environments, such as office or outdoors
- Ability to work in challenging working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while protected by PPE, for extended periods of time
- Essential physical requirements, such as climbing, standing, stooping, or typing
- Occasional work weekends, nights, or be on-call as a regular part of the job
- Occasional travel requirements
