CONSTRUCTION SERVICES PRACTICE
Michael Baker Internationals Construction Services staff supports clients by acting as their trusted on-site agent through all phases of construction, from pre-design to close-out, by providing qualified construction managers, inspectors, constructability reviewers, schedulers, estimators and safety experts. DESCRIPTION
Michael Baker is seeking a Construction Inspector to serve as a key member of the firms growing construction management team in Detroit on inspection projects throughout central and lower Michigan. The successful candidate will perform testing and inspection services on road and bridge projects for MDOT and other Local Agency Program (LAP) clients, as well as inspection for improvements to airport airside and landside projects. Between field assignments, this position may involve design tasks such as constructability reviews of plans for upcoming projects as well as assisting technical staff during plan preparation. Responsibilities include:
- Review plans and specifications associated with assigned work on active construction contracts
- Notify project engineer or project supervisor of apparent constructability issues or errors in plans
- Oversee daily operations of contractor or subcontractor personnel to ensure that work is being performed in accordance with plans and specifications
- Answer basic contractor questions about plan and specification requirements
- Identify contractor means and methods that are inconsistent with plans and specifications, and discuss needed changes with the contractor as well as the project engineer or project supervisor
- Make measurements and observations of work being performed to ensure accurate quantities are tracked for completed work
- Prepare detailed field drawings or electronic templates to support the calculations being used to justify the pay quantities
- Monitor material testing needs associated with work being performed
- Understand and apply testing frequencies for various materials used on the contract to ensure that enough tests are being taken to cover the work performed
- Electronically document pay quantities, material requirements, and contractor staff in an inspectors daily report using MDOT Field Manager
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or GED (Associates degree in construction technology or related field preferred)
- 5+ years of MDOT or LAP road construction experience
- Valid drivers license and ability to pass a background check
- ICET Michigan Certified Bituminous Paving or Bituminous Paving Operations Certification
- Michigan Concrete Association Level 1 Concrete Field-Testing Technician
- American Concrete Institute Concrete Field-Testing Technician Grade 1
- ICET Michigan Certified Aggregate Inspection Technician Certification Level 1
- ICET Michigan Certified Density Control Technician Certification
- EGLE Storm Water Management Construction Site Certification
- EGLE Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control (SESC) Plan Review and Design Certification
- Good interpersonal, communication, and conceptual thinking skills
- Possess strong math skills, including algebra and geometry for determining areas and volumes
- Ability to prioritize project assignments to meet competing deadlines
COMPENSATON
The approximate compensation range for this position $30/hr - $46/hr. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
