MAJOR FUNCTION:
The City of Tallahassee is looking for a detail-oriented professional to join our team as a Building Plans Reviewer. In this role, you'll apply your architecture or engineering expertise to ensure residential and commercial projects meet all building codes, safety standards, and design requirements before construction begins. Your work will directly impact the safety, accessibility, and sustainability of our community's structures.
What you'll do:
- Review and approve residential and commercial building, architectural, and construction plans for compliance with State minimum building, fire, handicap, and energy codes, as well as applicable ordinances.
- Collaborate with contractors, architects, engineers, property owners, and City staff to address code compliance questions, provide technical guidance, and escalate complex issues to supervisors when needed.
- Verify contractor licenses, calculate permit fees, and issue building permits in accordance with regulations.
- Guide the public and departmental staff through permit requirements, code enforcement processes, and related fee structures.
- Maintain detailed records and reports while conducting Type A Site Plan reviews to identify and resolve code compliance concerns.

Minimum Training & Experience
Minimum Requirements
- Have a High School Diploma or GED
AND
- Have at least five (5) years of technical work experience as a plans examiner, building construction estimator, State of Florida licensed general, building or residential contractor, or building construction supervisor
OR
- Have a two (2) year degree in architectural, building construction, or engineering technology
AND
- Have at least three (3) years of technical work experience as a plans examiner, building construction estimator, State of Florida licensed general, building or residential contractor, or building construction supervisor
Preferred Qualifications:
- Must possess, at the time of appointment, a Standard Building Inspector License and Plans Examiner License issued by the State of Florida
OR
- Must meet eligibility requirements to obtain a Provisional Building Inspector License and Provisional Plans Examiner License issued by the State of Florida
- Individuals hired under the provisional license option must obtain a Standard Building Inspector License and Plans Examiner License issued by the State of Florida within one year of appointment, as a condition of continued employment.
Salary Range
$20.8354 to $56.5383/hourly. Hiring rate generally will not exceed $35.3398/hour
