At Utah Valley University, the Scenic Carpenter/Craftsperson plays a vital role in bringing creative visions to life for a wide range of performances and events. Working under the guidance of the Scene Shop supervisor and assistant supervisors, this position helps set up, operate, and strike scenic elements that support productions in Music, Theatre, Dance, Art & Design, The Noorda Series, and other special projects.

This hands-on role offers the opportunity to collaborate with talented artists, designers, and technicians while contributing directly to the success of high-quality performances. With varied hours that may include evenings, weekends, and holidays, each project brings new challenges and the satisfaction of seeing your craftsmanship showcased on stage. This position is ideal for those who enjoy problem-solving, teamwork, and the rewarding pace of live production work in a dynamic arts environment.

  • Builds and manufactures scenic elements safely and effectively, supporting the Department of Theatrical Arts for Stage & Screen, Department of Dance, Department of Music, and Department of Art & Design productions. Facilitates needs for the School of the Arts.
  • Maintains the Scenic Workshop facilities and tools and facilitates the safe storage and transfer of scenic elements and scenic properties into their identified storage areas in both on-campus and off-campus storage locations.
  • Strives to continue to develop skills within Scenic Workshop while maintaining current task completion.
  • Performs any other job-related duties as assigned.

One year of experience in the field of scenic craftsmanship or any related field of building and/or construction. Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds unassisted.

Preferred Qualifications:

One or more semesters of Stagecraft.Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the materials, methods, and tools involved in constructing scenic elements is beneficial but is not required.
  • Knowledge of the arithmetic, algebra, and geometry required for the appropriate execution of scenic drawings and artistic renderings.
  • Knowledge of basic shop safety rules and basic shop safety procedures.

Skills

  • Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

  • Determining which tools, fasteners and equipment are required to safely complete any assigned task.

  • Watching gauges, dials, or other available indicators to make sure a tool is working properly.

Abilities

  • Ability to quickly move and coordinate fingers, limbs, and body to grasp, manipulate or assemble objects.

  • Ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects.

  • Ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.

  • Ability to arrange things or actions in a certain order or pattern according to a specific rule or set of rules (e.g., patterns of numbers, letters, words, pictures, mathematical operations).

  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds unassisted.
