The City of Pasadena - Public Works Department is currently seeking a skilled Construction Inspector I/II to review contract specifications and inspect the work of contractors engaged in major street and other public works construction and improvement.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will have thorough knowledge of principles, methods, materials, equipment, and safety hazards of construction; applicable laws, regulations, codes, and departmental policies governing the construction of public works projects and private development. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication skills, a superior attitude for being solution-oriented, has an aptitude for principles, methods, techniques of construction, and can readily apply federal, state, and city codes aligned with industry standards.
Appointment will be made at the Construction Inspector I or Construction Inspector II level depending on experience and qualifications.

- Inspects the work of contractors engaged in major construction of street openings and widenings, storm drains, laying of sewers and utility lines, street lighting, traffic signals, parks, landscaping, and the installation of electrical wires and conduit for conformance with requirements and specifications of contracts including earth moving operations, placement of base materials, paving, utility placement, culvert construction, pouring of concrete, landscaping, and construction of buildings and specialized facilities; enforces compliance with contract plans and specifications; computes contractor work in progress; initiates work order changes; interprets and coordinates contract provisions with contractor.
- Inspects private development construction work, including concrete forms placement, reinforcing steel and fencing, and placement, consolidation, and curing of concrete; enforces compliance with plans, specifications, City standards a proper construction practices for work such as installation of water lines, sewer, utility conduits, landscape improvements, construction of storm drains, culverts, flood control channels, catch basins, junction structures, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, driveways, and streets; stipulates correction and repairs necessary before final acceptance is made; ensures proper placement and maintenance of signs, barricades and warning devices; recommends to supervisor acceptance of public improvements in completed private developments.
- Reviews plans and specifications of proposed construction; holds pre-construction conferences; notifies affected utilities, public safety agencies, and the public regarding proposed construction; performs final inspection and ensures completion of necessary corrections; reviews "as-built" plans for accuracy.
- Inspects adjacent properties for damages from construction activity; coordinates inspections with other City departments; performs necessary field tests; confers with City engineering staff on design problems encountered in the field.
- Coordinates with other City departments, developers, contractors, and utility agencies; maintains logbooks and records of inspection.
- Checks materials to ensure compliance with job specifications; makes calculations in the field.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Construction Inspector I: Three years of inspection experience on public works construction projects, or on improvement work performed under permit on public works facilities, or three year of engineering experience in the design and inspection of public works construction projects. One year of field survey work on public works projects may be used in lieu of one year of inspection work.
- Construction Inspector II: Four years inspection experience on public work construction projects, or on improvement work performed under permit on public works facilities, or four years of engineering experience in the design and inspection of public works construction projects. One year of the four years' experience must include the inspection of major and complex projects. One year of field survey work on public works projects may be used in lieu of one year of inspection work.
SELECTION PROCESS
The selection process will consist of an evaluation of training and experience and the most highly qualified candidates may be invited to participate in an oral examination and department interview.

Candidates selected for this position are subject to a one-year probationary work period.
