The City of Redding Public Works Department is accepting applications for the position of Plant Mechanic. The successful candidate will have strong mechanical knowledge, performing a wide variety of skilled and complex troubleshooting and repair of a variety of equipment including pumps, engines, electric motors, valves, pressure and flow regulators, emergency generators, air compressors, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, filters, chlorination systems and other equipment associated with the operation of water or wastewater treatment plants.

  • Perform repairs, welding, fabrication, and rebuilding of shop, field and plant equipment used in the collection, transport, and treatment of water and wastewater.
  • Inspect, diagnose and repair mechanical defects on all types of equipment.
  • Operate City vehicles and equipment, including forklift, crane, and various types of tractors.
  • Complete complex repairs on various mechanical, electrical and hydraulic equipment and related components. Disassemble components and repair or replace defective parts.
  • Follow proper safety practices, precautions, and procedures, such as confined space entry, storing, handling, and transporting gases, using correct lock-out tag-out procedures.

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the installation, repair, adjustment and maintenance of equipment common to treatment facilities
  • All appropriate City, State, and Cal/OSHA standards, policies, and regulations relating to construction, maintenance and repair in the work place, including equipment lock-out tag-out procedures
  • Codes, ordinances and regulations pertaining to the work to include Environmental Protection Agency and/or regional air quality regulations
  • Methods, tools, materials and equipment used in the operation, maintenance, and repair of complex mechanical equipment and engines
  • Techniques of carpentry and painting trades; Rigging principles and techniques

Ability to:

  • Diagnose and repair defects in a variety of complex mechanical equipment common to treatment facilities
  • Perform a variety of routine and advanced mechanical work on a variety of pumps, internal combustion engines as well as related co-generation equipment, gearboxes, blowers etc.
  • Perform MIG and ARC Welding, including cutting, torching, brazing and oxy acetylene
  • Perform the required procedures in operation, instruction, and service manuals
  • Estimate labor and materials for proposed work, prepare rough sketches, shop mathematics, basic electrical and instrumentation
  • May be tasked with overseeing the work of contractors in the installation, repair, etc. of equipment.

Education:

  • Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying;
  • Typical education would include a high school diploma, or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of journey level experience in the maintenance of an industrial or treatment facility

OR

  • A minimum of four (4) years of full time experience in operating, maintaining and repairing internal combustion engines, generators and other industrial machinery.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid California driver's license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment.
  • Possession and maintenance of a California Class A driver's license with appropriate endorsements and adherence to DOT regulations within one (1) year from date of appointment is required.
  • Possession and maintenance of crane operator certification within six (6) months from date of appointment is required.
  • Must be able to enter and work in confined spaces, participate in the Confined Space Program, and perform confined space rescue if needed.
  • Mechanical Technologist certification from California Water Environment Association is desirable.
  • When assigned to the Water Treatment division must possess and maintain a Water Distribution Operator Grade D-1 Certificate from the State of California.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be willing to work weekend, overtime and off-hours as required in emergency situations.

Selection Process:

Final appointment is contingent upon:

  • Positive past employment references
  • Review of a driver history record (depending on position)
  • Passing a city paid fingerprint criminal conviction check (applicants 18 and older)
  • Passing of a pre-employment medical exam and drug and alcohol screening test (depending on position)

Veteran's Credit: Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating "Honorable Discharge" from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.
