The Assistant Building Official provides supervision and leadership to the building inspection staff and assists the Building Official in applying and enforcing City and State Building Codes. This position will support the City's mission by ensuring safety, code compliance, and delivering excellent customer service to our residents, developers, and contractors.

What you will get to do:

  • Provide daily leadership to building inspectors, ensuring teams are meeting high levels of customer service to the public
  • Daily supervision of the building inspectors including developing work processes, establishing work schedules;
  • Manage performance and manage work to meet agreed upon goals and objectives
  • Serve as the authority on State and City Codes and inspection processes, lead code and program updates
  • Collaborate with staff to make inspection decisions in cases
  • Manage information and training to the building inspectors concerning permits, alternate methods and materials and code interpretations
  • Analyze and review pertinent laws, statues, regulations, ordinances, policies and procedures to ensure compliance
  • Assure appropriate information and training is provided to the building inspectors concerning permits, alternate methods and materials and code interpretations
  • Main point of contact for external customers regarding escalated concerns/requests
  • Develop and administer inspection training programs needed to maintain staff certification requirements
  • Work with Building Official to monitor budget
  • Serve as acting Building Official in their absence

Qualities we are looking for:MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate's degree or Trade School certification

  • Five (5) to Eight (8) years of supervisory experience in building inspections or code enforcement

  • Strong knowledge of Oregon State Building Codes and City code enforcement practices

Any combination of qualifying education, training and/or experience equivalent to 7-10 years will be considered.

Required Certifications at time of hire:

  • Oregon Inspector Certification (OIC)

  • Oregon Building Official or ICC Certified Building Official (CBO)

  • Oregon Commercial Inspector (SIA) or ICC B2 Certification

  • Oregon Residential Inspector (CAS) or ICC B1 Certification

Preferred Certifications:

  • Oregon Mechanical Inspector (MIA) or ICC M2 Certification
