The Department of Transportation and Public Works has an opening for a Residential Building Inspector.These positions are responsible for performing inspections of residential construction, occupancy, property maintenance inspection, and related sites to determine compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, standards, plans, and specifications.
The typical starting salary is between $23.10 -$27.72 / hour depending on the candidate's qualifications and experience as well as budgetary considerations. Examples of Duties
- Performs construction, occupancy, and property maintenance inspections on residential buildings and sites to determine basic compliance with approved drawings and County codes, ordinances and regulations for mechanical, structural, electrical, and plumbing work relating to new and existing construction, room additions, swimming pools, retaining walls, garages, decks, and other residential improvements.
- Under general supervision, issues approvals for inspections of construction the meets County standards and issues correction orders on sites failing to comply with codes.
- Issues violation notices to owners for work under construction without permits or by contractors without the appropriate licenses.
- Inspects buildings damaged by fire to determine the extent of the damage and completes damage reports indicating whether certified plans will be required prior to issuance of permits.
- Maintains inspection records includingwritten inspection reports, violation notices, pictures of violations, and stop workorders.
- Advises contractors, owners, and supervisors of inspection results, stop work orders, and violationnotice issues orother actions taken.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Five years experience in all facets of the building construction trade, preferably including experience in building inspection and/or code enforcement; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Applicants must possess a current, valid driver's license.

SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT: A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant's education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available.
The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. After initial interviews with the selected candidates are conducted, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire. Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire.
The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision.
All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be covered by the County.
