The Maintenance Mechanic performs journeymen level a variety of woodcrafters, carpentry, asbestos containment, masonry, locksmith, painting and roofing tasks where fit, accuracy and space are essential and structural soundness and appearance is essential.
Major Duties:
Performs the full range of journey level duties associed with a variety of woodcrafters (15%), carpentry (20%), asbestos containment (20%), masonry (5%), locksmith (15%), painting (15%) and roofing (5%) tasks where fit, accuracy and space are essential and structural soundness and appearance is essential. Will work with cabinetry, furniture, orthopedic devises for use in medical offices and other uses. Tasks will require constructing, altering, repairing, and modifying items made of metal, wood, and wood substitutes.
Will make site inspections and determinion of process to isole asbestos containing merials prior to the breach of any asbestos containment barrier. Employee will construct and oversee asbestos barriers on job sites. Tasks will also include making sure th qualified vendors/employees conduct air sampling prior, during and after completion of asbestos containment work when deemed necessary by the Safety Office.
Builds fixtures, shelving, cabinets, interior walls, lhs, shehing, floors, ceiling, and stairs with verbal and/or drawings. Installs window frames, doors, outside trims, inside trims. Maintains, repairs, and alters the interior and exterior structures built from concrete, block, ceramic tiles by preparing and spreading mortar or adhesive; cutting, shaping, and laying blocks and tiles; and finishing joints.
Performs plastering duties: Makes plaster and applies to walls and ceilings, taking into considerion type of lhing, required thickness, weher conditions, etc. Lays on scrch co and examine for dryness before applying next co. Fits creeds to edges and corners; scores surfaces for finishing co. Skims finish co on with trowel and works over with wet brush to produce smooth surface. Smooth angles and corners with trowel and flo. Textures finish with stipple brush, rubber sponge or paper.
Paints a variety of surfaces, such as interiors and exteriors of buildings and/or stionary mobile equipment, where appearance as well as surface protections are important. Prepares surfaces, mixes paints and applies primer, intermedie and finish cos with brush, roller or spray gun. Uses gloss, semi-gloss and special paints, enamels, varnishes, stains, lacquers and shellacs.
Uses tools and power equipment such as handsaws, power saws, skill saws, scaffolding, and fine surface merials, including blocks, tiles, metal, wood and wood substitutes. Is responsible for maintaining tools and equipment in good working condition.
Resolves problems in the installion and repair of systems furniture and non-modular furniture. Assembles, delivers and performs limited repairs to office type furniture th is not modular in nures.
Work Schedule: Monday- Friday, 6:00am-2:30pm

Physical Requirements : May handle or carry weights up to 90 pounds, and occasionally more. Assistance is usually available for handling of heavier merial and equipment. Heavy exertion is required frequent intervals. Work requires pushing, pulling, lifting, reaching, walking, climbing, stooping, ability for normal mental and muscular coordinion simultaneously, normal hearing and vision. Must have physical capabilities for working inside and outside in excessive he and cold, noise, confined areas, inclement weher and on intermittent slippery or uneven surfaces th can be found or in transit to or from work sites. May receive minor cuts and abrasions while performing these duties. Must be able to work from ladders and plforms, and work in awkward and uncomfortable positions.
Working Conditions: Incumbent may be assigned to work in areas/confined spaces where certain potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present. These agents may include, but are not limited to fumes, dust, noise, he, ionizing, and non-ionizing radiion, chemicals, etc. To ensure employee safety and health, personnel protection programs are maintained consistent with applicable laws and regulions. Incumbent required to wear respirors and must be physically able to perform assigned work tasks as directed above and opere safety equipment. Pulmonary function test, chest ex-ray, completion of personal history questionnaire, and a physical evaluion conducted by a physician is required prior to start and then annually. Incumbent will work a regular tour of duty, may work overtime, nights or weekends. Incumbent exposed to asbestos containing areas. Incumbent must follow VASDHS Medical Center Memorandum 00-52, Airborne Asbestos Protection.

Without more than normal supervision
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through Nional Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizions (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience th transles directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience credited on the basis of time actually spent in approprie activities. Participion in the seasonal influenza program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locions or who come into contact with VA pients or other HCP as part of their duties. VHA locions include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associed clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased medical facilities. HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrive, remote and onsite, paid and without compension, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, researchers, volunteers and health professions trainees (HPTs) who are expected to perform any or all of their work these facilities. HPTs may be paid or unpaid and include residents, interns, fellows and students. HCP also includes VHA personnel providing home-based care to Veterans and drivers and other personnel whose duties put them in contact with pients outside VA medical facilities.
The Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP) and Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP) provide eligible displaced VA competitive service employees with selection priority over other candides for competitive service vacancies. To be well-qualified, applicants must possess experience th exceeds the minimum qualificions of the position including all selective factors if applicable, and must be proficient in most of the requirements of the job. Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacion) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave a re (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-reled non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the re which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment de and is not guaranteed.
