PLANT MECHANIC

CITY OF BARTLESVILLE

WATER PLANT MECHANIC

JOB SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, performs repair and maintenance on all equipment at the water plant and pump stations; installs or fabricates new parts as needed; performs routine ground maintenance as required. Performs preventative maintenance on plant and field equipment, to include: changing oil, applying grease to bearings in motors, gear boxes, pumps, cylinders, air valves, and drive shafts; cleans and adjusts chemical feeders and other equipment; bleeds water from air storage tanks and supply lines. Performs repairs and installations of equipment, to include: disassembling broken or worn equipment, diagnosing problems, determining if faulty part should be rebuilt or replaced; installing new and replacement machinery. Checks, cleans, and repairs chemical feeder. Checks stations, fills chemical feeders, checks chlorine and equipment. Cleans stopped sewage lines. Serves as relief operator as required. Coordinates the purchasing and inventory control of parts, equipment, and supplies for unit. Serves as back-up for the Laboratory Technician position as required. Performs general facility and grounds maintenance activities in designated area of the water plant and pump stations. Performs other related duties as assigned.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience: High School diploma or GED; and, two to four years of progressively responsible related experience; or, any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Electronics experience preferred. Licenses and Certifications: Valid State Driver's License. State Class C Water Operators License. State Class C Water Operators License within 18 months. State Laboratory Technician Class C License (desirable). Journeyman electrician license preferred, but not required. Knowledge of: Construction, operation, maintenance and repair of large pumps, motors, valves, and other units of mechanical and hydraulic equipment in a water plant. Materials, methods, and equipment utilized in the maintenance and repair of equipment in a water plant. Basic principles and practices of pneumatics, electricity and electronics. Pipe installation and repair. Basic principles of plumbing. Recordkeeping, report preparation, filing methods and records management techniques. All computer applications and hardware related to performance of the essential functions of the job. Applicable state, federal and local ordinances, laws, rules and regulations. Skill in: Using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines. Using mathematics. Communicating clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing. Reading and interpreting blue prints, operating manuals, and schematics. Mental and Physical Abilities: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and so forth. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals. While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, speak and hear, and lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Working Conditions: While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is regularly exposed to wet or humid conditions, work near moving mechanical parts, work in high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, risk of electrical shock. The incumbent's working conditions are typically very loud. Must be able to work in a very stressful environment where constructive feedback from others is encouraged. Must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the City's safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory personnel. Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined in the City's sole discretion. Must be regularly available and willing to work such hours as the City determines are necessary or desirable to meet its business needs. Must be available and willing to work overtime per day or per week as the City determines is necessary or desirable to meet its business needs. Must be available and willing to work such weekends and holidays as the City determines are necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.
