This is work in the inspection, testing, and installation of electrical equipment. Performs electrical work on motor control centers, plant process equipment, lighting systems, control panels, and other electrical/mechanical equipment within the Water Department. Work in under general supervision and subject to review by the Water Superintendent.
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 80 pounds of force occasionally, up to 40 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for reading and preparing written or computer reports, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, and operation of motor vehicles or equipment; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. Regular attendance is an essential function of the position.
- Performs maintenance and necessary repairs to medium voltage switchgear, pump starters, and their control circuits.
- Establish and perform preventative maintenance program on medium voltage transformers, switch gear, and associated equipment.
- Performs maintenance and necessary repairs to 480 volt pump starters and their control circuits.
- Performs regular electrical preventive maintenance work on equipment according to a preestablished schedule.
- Locates and marks the locations of underground electrical facilities for use by contractors and utilities.
- Performs electrical maintenance and necessary repairs to chemical feed systems, feeders, motors, and other related machinery.
- Installs and/or replaces electrical switches, conduits and wiring, receptacles, lighting fixtures, and lights.
- Coordinates work with private contractors and utility companies, including, but not limited to annual services such as generator maintenance, transformer inspection and testing, and UPS maintenance and testing.
- Provides written reports on electrical failures and necessary repairs taken.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned.
- Requires knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary in the electrical trades work, including familiarity with specific requirements for safety related to medium voltage electrical work.
- Requires working knowledge of the electrical codes.
- Requires working knowledge of tools, materials, and methods and practices of the electrical trade.
- Requires ability to read, interpret and work from drawings, sketches and plans.
- Requires ability to diagnose operational problems in control systems.
- Requires a good physical condition, manual dexterity, agility, free from color blindness, and the ability to perform strenuous tasks, including climbing and working at heights.
- Requires ability to respond to emergency calls and the willingness to work outside in all kinds of weather.
- Requires ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, fellow workers, and other City employees and the general public.
- Requires maintenance of an active telephone number and the willingness to be on call.
- Be trustworthy, conscientious, and have proper regard for the use and cost of time, materials, tools, and equipment.
- Requires legible handwriting with the ability to write job reports and perform such computations and drawings as may be encountered in shop practices.
- Requires computer use skills including use of internet search for equipment and supplies.
- Demonstrative knowledge of the use and application of electronic mail systems.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Must have a High school diploma or a GED and two years experience in the electrical field.
Journeyman Electrician Licensure would be a plus.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires possession of a valid Illinois driver's license.
Requires the physical ability to comply with the OSHA/IDL Respiratory Protection Standard.
