Job Summary:

In this role, you will conduct field investigations and plan specifications for project geotechnical design. You will oversee the field and laboratory, conduct studies, and interpret regulations. You will participate in new business efforts and proposal preparation including identifying client needs and developing cost estimates. Your expertise will help ensure geotechnical project aspects meet project requirements.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Evaluates, selects, and applies standard geotechnicalengineering methods preparing specifications forsubsurface investigations for new and existing facilities
  • Performs and may lead geotechnical analyses such asstability of soil and rock slopes, rockexcavation and slope protection, bearingcapacity and settlement of shallowfoundations, lateral earth pressures, and axialand lateral pile capacities
  • Prepares geotechnical engineering reportsand presents the results of the investigationsand reports to members of the project team
  • Coordinates civil or structural engineering designs withgeotechnical assessments
  • Communicates geotechnical issues with theproject team during the engineering designstage of the project
  • During the construction phase of projects,responsibilities may include overview ofearthwork operations, monitoring of pileinstallation and load testing, inspection ofcritical foundation subgrade, and monitoringof ground improvement
  • Oversees outside geotechnical consultants hired byBechtel or the client to perform these tasks
Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires M.S. degree in geotechnical engineering and 5 years of relevant work experience, or Ph.D. degree in geotechnical engineering and 3 years of relevant work experience.

Required Knowledge and Skills:
  • Familiar with subsurface investigations, foundation design and analysis, and earthwork and slope stability. Basic understanding related to construction dewatering and ground improvement.
  • Knowledge of seismic-related issues and evaluation of liquefaction potential of soils.
  • Familiar with computer applications such as Plaxis 2D and 3D, FLAC, LPILE, APILE, SHAFT, GROUP, SLOPE/W, SEEP/W, GRLWEAP, CAPWAP, gINT, Settle3D, and DYNA6.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and MicroStation for drafting geotechnical drawings.
  • Familiar with Geographic Information System (GIS) applications such as ArcGIS.
  • Proficient in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Working knowledge of U.S. codes and practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills to communicate with team in preparation of reports, memos, calculations, and other technical documentation.
  • Willing and able to travel to and remain at jobsites in the U.S. and overseas on short- and long-term assignments.
  • Engineering in Training (EIT) certification
