Job Title: Land Survey Crew Chief

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Land Surveyor/Crew Chief to lead a team on various projects throughout the Southeast region. This position is based in our Wilmington office, supporting projects around the coast of North Carolina. The ideal candidate will work as a surveyor in the field, independently or leading a small team, primarily consisting of two individuals.

Responsibilities

  • Locate, review, and research job locations to identify landmarks, physical objects, and significant land changes affecting the survey.
  • Supervise the survey crew, evaluate priorities, and coordinate and organize work efforts.
  • Supervise the standard of work and derive necessary field calculations from completed work.
  • Ensure maintenance of instruments and equipment.
  • Verify that angles, distances, and other collected information are accurate and conform to regulations and standards.
  • Coordinate survey findings with engineering personnel, clients, and others involved in projects.
  • Research previous survey evidence, maps, deeds, physical evidence, and other records to obtain necessary data.
  • Determine methods and procedures for establishing or reestablishing survey control.
  • Maintain accurate notes, records, and sketches to describe work performed.
  • Complete daily logs and expense reports.
  • Complete safety forms and ensure all crew members follow safety procedures.
  • Consult with computer operators and review the final production of work performed.
  • Familiarity with commonly used surveying terms and survey tools for measuring, sighting, and leveling is required.
  • Operate survey equipment such as the Total Station/Data Collector, Level, and various Global Positioning System (GPS) methods.

Essential Skills

  • 3+ years of progressive experience in survey field operations, with at least 2 years as an Instrument Operator.
  • Proficiency with survey equipment including total stations, data collectors, and GPS equipment.
  • Strong technical skills and behavioral traits such as being process-oriented, steady, helpful, analytical, and a problem solver.
  • Ability to work independently, methodically, and with attention to detail.
  • Possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable motor vehicle record.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with construction stakeouts, utility locating, and topographic surveys.
  • Familiarity with Civil 3D and ALTA surveys.
  • Capability to perform hydro surveys.
  • Willingness to undertake overnight travel if required.

Work Environment

The position is based in Wilmington, NC, with the majority of time spent in the field. The role may require travel within the region, including NC, SC, and VA. While most work is within a daily commute, there is a possibility of overnight travel, accounting for approximately 60% of the role's requirements. Compensation is provided for travel outside the daily commute.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Wilmington, North Carolina.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $30.00/hr.
