General Definition of Work:

Performs responsible skilled work repairing and maintaining gasoline, diesel, and electric powered equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision of the garage foreman.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:

Performing preventive maintenance and servicing equipment; assisting in repairing and maintaining gasoline and diesel powered school buses and other automotive equipment.

  • Performs state mandated periodic preventive maintenance and diagnoses, adjusts, repairs, and services gasoline and diesel powered vehicles, changes and repairs tires.
  • Operates various types of shop equipment, machinery, specialized tools and devices such as dynamometers, dial gauges, wheel alignment gauges, grinders, drill presses, hydraulic lift, impact wrench and hand tools.
  • Performs roadside maintenance and responds to road calls and other emergency calls for service.
  • Prepares records and files.
  • Assists other mechanics.
  • Performs snow removal of school parking lots and maintenance on equipment in times of inclement weather.
  • Fuels buses and maintains appropriate records.
  • Assists with cleaning general garage areas and grounds.

Specific Information :

Possession of an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia or applicant obtains their CDL through the CCPS Transportation department.

After a 90 day probationary period, the employee becomes eligible for usage of a CCPS F250.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

General knowledge of the operation and repair of the components, systems and accessories of gasoline and diesel powered equipment and machinery; general knowledge of tools and equipment, as well as the special tools, gauges, machinery and shop equipment used in the repair, servicing and maintenance of transit equipment; ability to detect by inspection any worn, defective or improperly adjusted parts; ability to follow oral and written instructions and to keep records of repair and service operations; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some automotive inspection and mechanical repair experience.

Physical Requirements:

This is very heavy work requiring exertion in excess of 100 pounds occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting,
