Job Purpose
Responsible for the fabrication, assembly, repair, inspection, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting of locomotive components, parts, and structures to ensure conformance with FRA, company, and customer specifications. This is accomplished by performing the following duties or ability to be trained to perform the following duties.

Education / Training
- High School Diploma or equivalent;
- Welding Certifications preferred.
Key Job Elements
- Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). Comply with the guidelines set forth by the FRA on Personal Blue Signal Protection of Workers;
- Following general safety rules, welds locomotive components / heavy plate and sheet metal such as underframe structures, end plates, draft gear pockets, etc.;
- Perform single and multi-pass welds in all positions (vertical, flat, and overhead) on locomotive components, parts, and structures;
- Ability to, or ability to learn to work from drawings, weld procedure specifications and operating procedures;
- Properly utilize equipment and tools consistently, accurately, and safely:
o Welders, cutting torches, grinders, gouging equipment, forklifts, overhead cranes, other tools;
- Follow written/scope of work instructions and or QWI's consistently, accurately, and safely;
- Analyze and able to correct faults related to inspection, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and installations of locomotive components;
- Participate in problem solving and continuous improvement activities;
- Maintain written and computer records as required;
- May roll, bend, flange, cut, and shape plates and other heavy parts using shop machinery;
- Keep work areas clean and organized and take proper care of all equipment and tools;
- Assist in other repairs and maintenance as assigned by supervision;
- Follow all safety policies and procedures, utilize all PPE;
- Specific site-based duties and responsibilities may apply, consult with local team.
Essential and Physical Activities Functions
- Strength - Position requires lifting up to 50 lbs. Requires stamina and strength to work in tight and confined spaces;
- Motion - Position requires the ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as climbing, reaching, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and kneeling. Position requires remaining in a stationary position for prolonged periods. Position requires working from heights exceeding 6 ft. off the ground with proper PPE and fall protection;
- Vision/Hearing Requirements - Position is exposed to UV and reflected radiation from a welding arc or torch. Position is exposed to high levels of noise and vibration from using tools. The use of proper PPE is required. The position requires the ability to read written instruction and understand both verbal and written instructions;
- Work Environment - Position can be located inside or outside dependent on situation. When inside the employees are subject to temperature extremes in non-temperature-controlled environments. When outside employees are subject to all weather elements;
- Emotional Demands - Employee is expected to work and cooperate as part of a team in order to meet production requirements;
- Safety - Position is safety sensitive as it requires working in and around live tracks and operation and repair of heavy equipment. Position requires strict adherence to safety policies (i.e. blue flag) and use of all required PPE.
Qualifications and Experience
- Welding experience (either on-the-job or technical training);
- Mechanical aptitude.
