Description The Senior Structural Engineer will lead structural design project teams to create world class designs for new projects, existing rebuilds, and redevelopments on a variety of electrical substation and related projects in the utility industry. The Senior Structural Engineer will lead a project team throughout the initial scoping, design, and construction support phases and will create code-compliant and safe structural plans while managing schedule, budget, and providing excellent client service. This position will be based in California and will primarily support local clients in the utility, municipality, and independent power producer (IPP) space to support the demands of aging infrastructure, load-growth, data center developments, and emerging technologies. Opportunities may include but are not limited to:
Leading structural design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion for project needs and requirements that are led by project managers.
Leading and overseeing rigid bus analysis and the design of electrical substation steel structures, equipment foundations, structure foundations and secondary oil containment.
Performing design and analysis in the state of California adhering to seismic requirements and IEEE 693 seismic qualifications
Leading a team of multi-discipline professionals to ensure project success.
Presenting designs and proposals to clients, permitting authorities, public interest groups, etc.
Providing support for our clients during construction.
Corresponding and/or meeting with clients, contractors, and vendors.
Leading project proposal and qualification statements to achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance and scope management.
Training and mentoring less experienced engineers in their technical and professional development.
Performing quality control reviews and responsible for QA/QC process adherence.
Participating in development of project schedule, scope, budget staffing planning and construction planning. Responsible for effective management of change orders.
Applying expert knowledge of commonly used structural concepts, practices, codes and procedures within the structural engineering services industry.
Applying knowledge and experience to complex projects and finding non-standard design solutions.
Preparing and presenting technical reports for clients and industry publications.
Building positive relationships with existing and new clients to further develop new business opportunities. Responsible for ensuring customer satisfaction goals and expectations are met.
Responsible for effective communication and coordination with other engineering disciplines.
Responsible for compliance with company and site safety policies.
Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from an ABET-accredited program
Professional Engineer (PE). Licensure in California and as a Structural Engineer (SE) preferred.
Seven (7) years of substation structural engineering experience. Consulting experience preferred. Master of Science degree in civil engineering may be substituted for one (1) year experience.
Ability to work methodically and analytically in a dynamic, quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
Knowledge in substation electrical physical design principles.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong computer skills (e.g. RISA 3D, RISA FDN, HILTI, MFAD, RAM Connection, Idea Statica).
Expert knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures. Strong knowledge of structural design codes (e.g., ASCE 113, CBC, ASCE 7, ACI 318, IEEE 693).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Experience with leading the discipline design for large projects and delegating work tasks to team members. Ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment.
Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
