Job Title: Shipfitter

Job Description

As a Shipfitter, you will lay out and fabricate metal structural parts such as plates, bulkheads, and frames. You will brace them in position within the hull of a ship for riveting or welding. This role involves working from blueprints or templates to accurately lay out positions of parts using scribes and hand tools, marking reference lines, and aligning parts using equipment such as jacks, turnbuckles, and wedges. Additionally, you will mark the location of holes to be drilled and install temporary fasteners to hold parts in place for welding or riveting. The role also includes installing packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories and members like doors and hatches.

Responsibilities

  • Lay out and fabricate metal structural parts for shipbuilding.

  • Brace parts in position within the hull for riveting or welding.

  • Work from blueprints or templates to lay out positions.

  • Use tools like jacks, turnbuckles, and wedges to align parts.

  • Mark locations for drilling and install temporary fasteners.

  • Install packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories.

  • Prepare molds and templates for nonstandard parts.

  • Tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding.

  • Roll, bend, flange, cut, and shape plates, beams, and other heavy metal parts.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years experience as a shipfitter.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints.

  • Proficiency in using hand tools and equipment for shipfitting tasks.

  • Experience with tack welding, cutting, and aligning metal parts.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 1st class shipfitter requires 7 years as a marine electrician with a stable job history.

  • 2nd class requires 3 to 4 years of experience.

  • Ability to use tools such as framing and combination squares, hammers, and clamps.

  • Familiarity with safety equipment like hard hats, safety glasses, and steel toe shoes.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Norfolk, Virginia.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $30.00/hr.
