General Description
The Natural Gas Equipment Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment and supporting the installation, maintenance, and repair of underground natural gas pipeline systems. This position plays a critical role in trenching, excavation, backfilling, pipe placement, and restoration, while ensuring compliance with all safety and regulatory standards. The Natural Gas Equipment Operator must obtain and maintain Operating Qualifications (OQs) and work collaboratively with crews under the supervision of a Foreman or Superintendent to ensure the safe and efficient completion of pipeline construction projects.
Key Duties
Heavy Equipment Operation:
Operate equipment such as excavators, backhoes, skid steers, front-end loaders, bulldozers, trenchers, and compactors to complete trenching, backfilling, and material movement tasks
Use machinery to excavate or move dirt, rock, and other materials according to project specifications.
Perform daily equipment inspections, pre-trip walkarounds, and routine preventive maintenance including fluid checks and greasing.
Load and unload equipment and materials, ensuring tools and materials are delivered safely and efficiently to the job site.
Pipeline Installation & Site Work:
Excavate and prepare trenches for natural gas pipelines, ensuring alignment, grade, and trench safety compliance.
Set and remove trench shoring and shielding systems in accordance with OSHA standards.
Install and backfill around pipe with precision using trench safety best practices.
Assist in preparation of construction sites by clearing debris, ensuring proper drainage, and maintaining safe working areas.
Support installation of pipelines and related infrastructure, including valves, fittings, and conduit as directed.
Safety, Compliance, & Documentation:
Obtain and maintain Operating Qualifications (OQs) required for working on natural gas pipelines.
Follow all OSHA, DOT, and company-specific safety protocols, including proper PPE usage.
Participate in safety meetings, training programs, and toolbox talks.
Secure job sites and materials at the end of each shift to ensure public and crew safety.
Complete daily logs and reports on equipment usage, maintenance, and work progress.
Team Coordination & Communication:
Communicate clearly with spotters, laborers, and supervision to ensure safe and accurate operation in congested or complex environments.
Work closely with Foremen and Superintendents to meet production targets and resolve field issues.
Assist in guiding and mentoring junior crew members when needed.
General Responsibilities:
Available to work day or night shifts, weekends, and overtime as required.
Perform manual labor tasks as needed to support pipeline installation efforts.
Uphold all company safety requirements and operating procedures.
May be subject to working out of town for periods of time due to customer demand.
Qualification Requirements
Education & Experience:
Minimum 3 years of experience operating heavy equipment on gas or underground utility projects.
Successful completion of Operator Qualification testing (computer-based and performance observation) as required by client/customer.
Valid driver's license required; CDL Class A or B preferred.
Valid DOT Medical Card or ability to obtain.
Skills & Competencies:
Strong knowledge of equipment operation, maintenance, and safety standards.
Familiarity with soil properties, trenching, compaction, and pipeline grades.
Understanding of trench safety systems, pipeline specifications, and job site protocols.
Excellent hand-eye coordination, physical dexterity, and ability to operate in tight workspaces.
Ability to read blueprints, site plans, and installation drawings.
Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.
Physical Demands
Frequent standing, walking, kneeling, crawling, and climbing.
Must be able to lift to 50 lbs frequently and up to 150 lbs with assistance.
Ability to climb extension ladders, maneuver in trenches and confined spaces.
Regular exposure to noise, vibration, and harsh weather conditions on construction sites.
Work Environment
Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, year-round.
Frequent interaction with heavy equipment, excavation zones, and natural gas utilities.
Exposure to construction materials, including diesel fuel, lubricants, solvents, asphalt, and dust.
Use of PPE required: hard hat, safety vest, gloves, boots, and eye protection.
