Material Testing Supervisor

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Material Testing Supervisor to oversee and coordinate all activities related to construction material testing in our Nephi, Utah facility and various job sites across the region. This supervisory role requires strong leadership, technical expertise in materials testing, and thorough knowledge of applicable standards and procedures, particularly those required in the state of Utah. The successful candidate will ensure all testing operations comply with industry standards, project specifications, and applicable local and state regulations.

Responsibilities

1. Supervision and Oversight

  • Supervise daily activities of field and laboratory technicians involved in materials testing.
  • Schedule and assign testing personnel and equipment for field and lab operations.
  • Oversee and review test results to ensure accuracy and compliance with standards.
  • Provide training and mentorship to technicians to promote quality and safety.
  • Maintain daily communication with project managers, clients, and contractors.

2. Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA/QC)

  • Implement and manage QA/QC programs for material testing operations.
  • Conduct internal audits of laboratory and field testing procedures.
  • Ensure proper calibration and maintenance of all testing equipment.
  • Prepare and review reports for completeness, accuracy, and compliance.
  • Interpret test data and advise project teams on material performance.

3. Regulatory Compliance and Safety

  • Ensure all work complies with Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) standards, ASTM , AASHTO , and other applicable codes.
  • Maintain certifications, lab accreditations (e.g., AASHTO R18), and safety programs.
  • Enforce OSHA and company safety policies in all testing environments.
  • Coordinate with regulatory agencies, engineers, and clients to meet project requirements.

4. Testing Types and Expertise Areas

  • Oversee testing of construction materials including but not limited to:
  • Soils (moisture/density, gradation, proctor testing)
  • Aggregates (gradation, specific gravity, LA abrasion)
  • Concrete (slump, air content, compressive strength)
  • Asphalt (compaction, density, extraction, binder content, Gmm, Gmb)
  • Troubleshoot discrepancies in testing results and investigate quality concerns.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED (required); Associates or Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Materials Science , or related field preferred.
  • Strong understanding of testing standards including ASTM, AASHTO, UDOT , and ACI specifications.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and materials testing software.

Required Certifications (Utah-Specific & Nationally Recognized):

A Material Testing Supervisor in Utah must hold or be able to obtain and maintain the following certifications:

Mandatory Certifications:

  • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I (American Concrete Institute)
  • WAQTC Certifications (Western Alliance for Quality Transportation Construction):
  • Soils
  • Aggregate
  • Asphalt
  • Embankment & Base
  • Nuclear Gauge Safety Certification (Radiation Safety Training per NRC/UDOT guidelines)
  • UDOT Laboratory Qualification Program (LQP) certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months)

Preferred Additional Certifications:

  • ACI Strength Testing Technician
  • ACI Aggregate Testing Technician Level I & II
  • NICET Certification in Construction Materials Testing (Level II or higher in Soils, Concrete, or Asphalt)
  • Osha 10/30-Hour Construction Safety Certification
  • AASHTO R18 Technical Manager Training (preferred but not required)
Additional Information

Work Conditions & Requirements:

  • Work performed in field environments and materials laboratory settings.
  • May require travel to job sites throughout central Utah and surrounding areas. A vehicle will be provided.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Must possess a valid Utah Drivers License with a clean driving record.
