The Opportunity

The Abbott RMDx Infectious Disease (ID) Business is looking for a Capital Project Engineer for our Lake Forest, IL location. The role focuses primarily on the process of project development which includes planning per Abbotts Front End Planning process and providing execution support to manufacturing capital projects. This includes development of capital project scope by working with quality, manufacturing, and engineering teams.

The Capital Project Engineer will be responsible for developing multiple alternate options to evaluate and guide the leaders to choose the best business case for the organization by working with multiple area budgetary and finance teams. The role requires utilizing engineering knowledge to support Facilities, Utilities, Infrastructure and manufacturing equipment design by properly preparing requests for proposal documentation, updating equipment specifications, and having detailed equipment design conversations with equipment suppliers. Ability to manage several projects at the same time with multiple timelines and maintain adherence to internal process timelines will be essential for this position.

What Youll Work On

  • Works closely with the ID sites to identify, scope, plan and conduct medium size to complex assigned projects. Communicate project progress and escalate issues to management in a timely manner.
  • Understands the business needs and has a thorough knowledge of the customer when developing a project scope. Leads development of Project Charter and documents the initial requirements that satisfy the stakeholders needs and expectations. Establishes engineering project objectives and technical criteria for evaluating project results and activities of the project team.
  • Monitors and controls project work to meet the performance objectives defined in the project plan. Focuses on cost and milestone achievement to optimize resource utilization.
  • Identifies areas of risk and mitigates risks through early risk assessments and implementation of fallback / mitigation strategies.
  • Identify, develop, and gather the resources to complete the project.
  • This may include preparing engineering designs and work specifications, developing project schedules, budgets and forecasts, and selecting materials, equipment, project staff, and external contractors. Uses established PM tools and techniques to stay within authorized budget limits and achieve the overall project and organizational objectives. Understand Project Management tools and methodologies. Understand engineering principles, theories, concepts, practices and techniques.
  • Direct the work of project team members, set goals and objectives, monitor progress on tasks.
  • Conduct meetings and prepare reports to communicate the status of the project.
  • Set priorities, allocate tasks, and coordinate project staff to meet project targets and milestones.
  • Conduct financial and operational data analysis to evaluate savings potential, monitor project performance, and identify trends or risks impacting business continuity
  • Synthesize data-driven insights from cross-functional reports to guide strategic planning, portfolio optimization, and risk mitigation.
  • Prepares reports, publishes, makes presentations to communicate findings, and document lessons learned

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree, preferably in mechanical, industrial, chemical, electrical, bio-medical or related discipline
  • 5+ years of operations engineering experience.
  • Approximately 2 years' experience in managing capital projects of varying complexity.
  • Demonstrated experience with Technical Project Planning.
  • Demonstrated clear, crisp and transparent communication style which conveys timely updates to leadership and key project stakeholders.
  • Problem solving and critical thinking skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Mechanical, Chemical or Industrial Engineering degree is preferred.
  • Experience in manufacturing site engineering is preferred
  • Project Cost Accounting experience
  • Basic knowledge of Lean Six Sigma methodologies
  • PMP or other relevant project management certification

The base pay for this position is

$75,300.00 $150,700.00

In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
