Weatherization Technician - HVAC

The Weatherization Technician installs energy-saving measures, may perform HVAC-related services, and ensures the safety and comfort of clients homes. This includes sealing air leaks, adding insulation, repairing ductwork, maintaining heating and cooling systems, and ensuring compliance with all safety and program standards.
ResponsibilitiesWeatherization Measures
- Locate and seal building air leaks using a blower door.
- Seal attics, floor, and wall penetrations around plumbing, electrical, ducts, flues, and framing.
- Apply caulk, spray foam, and weather-stripping on doors, windows, and attic hatches.
- Replace broken windowpanes and apply glazing.
- Repair drywall and plaster.
- Install vapor barriers in crawl spaces.
- Modify or install ventilation to ensure safe indoor air quality.
- Install insulation in attics, walls, and floors, including dense-pack and batt types.
- Insulate water heaters, pipes, ducts, and hydronic systems.
- Safely operate and maintain insulation machines and generators.
- Replace incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient lighting.
- Install low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators after assessing plumbing conditions.
HVAC & Combustion Appliance Work
- Install, clean, and improve the efficiency of heating and cooling systems for program clients.
- Inspect and test combustion appliances for safety and proper function.
- Diagnose and repair HVAC equipment as needed.
- Use diagnostic tools to measure and adjust combustion systems.
- Complete detailed written reports on materials used, work performed, and appliance conditions.
Program Operations
- Complete work orders on time and in compliance with all federal, state, and program guidelines.
- Maintain program vehicles, tools, and equipment in safe working conditions.
- Communicate effectively with clients in person, over the phone, and in writing.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Utah drivers license.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly and perform physically demanding work.
- Rocky Mountain Gas Association (RMGA) Gas Technician Certification and EPA 608 Refrigeration Certification, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
- Experience in HVAC installation, repair, and diagnostics.
- Skilled in using diagnostic tools for combustion appliances.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and time management.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion.
Preferred Qualifications
- 4+ years of relevant construction and/or HVAC experience.
- Experience working with low-income populations.
- Bilingual in Spanish (speaking and writing).
Other Requirements
- Submit to a criminal background check upon hire.
- Attend required training, which may occur outside regular work hours.
- Obtain program-required certifications, including:
- Blower Door
- Duct Blasting
- Zonal Pressure Testing
- Boundary Pressure Testing
- QCI Pre-Training
Working Conditions
- Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions, dust, odors, noise, heat, cold, and fiberglass.
- Frequent stooping, kneeling, squatting, bending, and overhead reaching.
- Ability to work in tight spaces such as crawlspaces and attics.
