Overview

The Environmental Project Manager is responsible for managing and executing diverse environmental projects with a focus on restoration, compliance, and remediation for federal, state, and private clients. The position ensures that projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable regulations and quality standards. This role supports the full lifecycle of environmental projects, from planning to close-out, acting as a technical expert and project leader, while mentoring staff and building client relationships. This role requires a strong technical background, project management skills, and the ability to oversee multidisciplinary teams executing complex environmental projects. This position is based in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, manage, and execute environmental projects involving site assessments, investigations, remediation, long-term monitoring/management, and compliance activities under IRP, MMRP, CERCLA, RCRA, and NEPA.
  • Conduct and oversee field activities including sampling, drilling oversight, remediation system installation, and subcontractor management.
  • Prepare high-quality technical reports, environmental planning documents (EAs, EISs, SAPs, QAPPs, EHMPs, LUCIPs), work plans, and health and safety plans.
  • Coordinate with regulatory agencies and DoD representatives to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
  • Conduct project and contract management of environmental projects, including managing resources (personnel, equipment, subcontractors, and budgets), complying with scopes of work, developing and managing project schedules and performance, performing financial management such as preparing invoices, monthly/periodic status reports, and preparing cost estimates for environmental projects.
  • Support and mentor junior staff by providing technical guidance and promoting knowledge-sharing across project teams.
  • Support business development initiatives for the environmental business line. Contribute to business development by assisting with proposals, cost estimates, and client engagement.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships through consistent communication, responsiveness, and delivery of high-quality work.
  • Travel up to 2025% is required; occasional weekend or holiday work may be necessary to meet project needs.
Qualifications

Skills/Qualifications: Ability to professionally and effectively interact with managers, coworkers, field operations staff, technical staff, subcontractors, and clients.

  • Capable of writing comprehensive reports and plans, and comfortable leading efforts that require interdisciplinary coordination.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills with the capacity for leadership in field-based environmental work and project management.
  • A strong foundation in environmental regulations such as CERCLA, RCRA, and NEPA, along with experience in the DoDs Defense Environmental Restoration Program (DERP), including the Installation Restoration Program (IRP) and the Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP), is highly desired.
  • Technical expertise in sampling techniques, field equipment use, and preparation of technical deliverables.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to think critically in dynamic field and project environments.

Military Installation Access and Security Clearance: This position requires access to military installations. Must be able to qualify for and obtain a base access pass and currently hold or be able to obtain a Secret security clearance.

Education and Experience: A bachelors degree in Geology, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Chemistry, or a related scientific or technical discipline is required. A minimum of three years of professional experience in environmental consulting, site investigation, or remediation project work is expected. Experience with field operations, subcontractor oversight, technical reporting, and business development in environmental projects is strongly preferred. Familiarity with federal environmental projects, particularly those involving military installations or munitions response, is advantageous.

Certifications: Candidates must possess, or be able to obtain, OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification with current refresher training. Professional certifications such as Registered or Professional Geologist (RG/PG), Engineer-in-Training (EIT), Professional Engineer (PE), or Certified Environmental Professional (CEP) are highly desirable. Project management credentials, such as a PMP certification, are considered a plus and reflect a candidates readiness to lead complex projects.

Physical Requirements: The ideal candidate must at a minimum be able to meet the following physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation :

  • Ability to perform repetitive motions with the hands, wrists, and fingers.
  • Ability to engage in and follow audible communications in emergency situations.
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods at a desk and working on a computer.

The Nakupuna Companies use a market-based compensation strategy to ensure that our employees are compensated within applicable market ranges commensurate with multiple factors, including but not limited to the individuals particular combination of education, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience, as well as contract-specific affordability, organizational requirements, and position location. The projected compensation range for this position is $80,000.00 to $95,000.00 (annualized USD). The salary range displayed represents the typical salary range for this position and is just one component of Nakupuna Companies total compensation package for employees.
