Job Description

Role: Foreman / Operator

Company: Schmidt Construction
Location: Caldwell, ID (83607 / Greater Boise Metro)

Overview

Schmidt Construction, a leader in underground wet utility construction, is looking for an experienced Foreman / Operator to join our team. Since 1979, we’ve been building Idaho’s underground infrastructure with excellence, speed, and pride. We’ve handled some of the toughest jobs in the Treasure Valley - deep sewer mains, high groundwater digs, storm drains, and irrigation systems - and built a reputation for professionalism, honesty, and a robust work ethic.

We’re looking for a Foreman / Operator who can run the iron, manage a crew, and keep jobs moving on time and on spec. This is a hands-on leadership role where your skills in machines and your ability to direct your crew will set the pace for the projects.

Core Responsibilities

  • Operate a variety of heavy equipment, including large excavators for mainline sewer excavation work, dozers, loaders and skid steers, and trucks

  • Lead and supervise an underground wet utility crew on active job sites

  • Coordinate and direct daily crew activities, including excavation, pipe laying, backfilling, and site prep

  • Develop, communicate daily task plans. Ensure work is done on spec, on schedule, and in compliance

  • Set trench boxes, shoring, and other protective systems in a safety-compliant manner

  • Monitor work progress, perform quality control checks, and address issues as they arise

  • Serve as on-site point of contact for the Superintendent, relaying updates, needs, and concerns

  • Perform daily equipment inspections, routine maintenance checks, and machinery servicing

  • Uphold safety standards. Actively participate in relevant safety meetings and site inspections

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of heavy equipment operation in underground utility or related construction

  • Minimum 1 year experience leading, planning, setting daily tasks, coordinating a crew in the field

  • Demonstrated skill in technical trenching (mainline sewer, deep digs, high groundwater)

  • Ability to read and interpret blue prints, grade stakes, laser levels, and basic drawings

  • Reliable transportation to and from job sites in the Treasure Valley

  • Strong work ethic, team player mentality, and pride in quality work

Preferred (Not Required)

  • CDL Class A

  • Certifications such as Trench Safety or OSHA 10/30

Pay & Benefits

  • Pay Range: $28-$34 Depending on Experience

  • Health, vision, and dental insurance (50% employer-paid for new employees; 100% for long-term)

  • Simple IRA with 3% employer match

  • Steady, year-round work with top-tier clients

  • Schedule: 8-12 hour shifts + OT opportunities
