The County of San Diego is currently looking for an Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Mechanic!

Some positions may receive a Locked Facilities Premium and shall be compensated an additional fifty cents ($0.50) per hour for each hour worked in a locked facility in the Sheriff's Department.

Interviews will take place the week of October 6th, 2025 and JOB OFFERs will be made the week of October 13th, 2025.

Did you know the county encompasses an area of over 4,000 square miles and is divided into four regions containing 17 zones for maintenance purposes? This work includes preventive maintenance on essential building systems, time critical response to emergency repairs, accomplishment of unscheduled maintenance services, compliance and service quality oversight for contract support and at select County facilities. Each zone consists of a Building Maintenance Supervisor (BMS) with a crew of Facilities Operations professionals consisting of Building Maintenance Engineers/Assistants (BME/A), Carpenters, HVAC Technicians, Electronic Security Technicians, Welders, Painters, Masons, and Plumbers, as well as overseeing contract vendors that support their operations.

The County of San Diego's Department of General Services has an opening for Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Mechanic. Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Mechanics maintain, repair, and rebuild refrigerating, ventilating, air conditioning, and heating equipment, and related control systems; and performs related work. Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Mechanics perform journey-level work maintaining, repairing, and rebuilding control systems in county facilities. Typical duties may include:

  • Installs, services, maintains, repairs, and rebuilds refrigeration, air conditioning systems, and ventilating and heating equipment.
  • Operates, diagnoses, maintain and troubleshoots Direct Digital Control (D.D.C) systems and Building Automation Systems.
  • Inputs, retrieves, views, extract, and prints information from the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

Experience with troubleshooting and repairing VRF systems, HVAC controls, and boilers is a plus.

HIRING TIMELINE AND DATES

The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below:

  • Interviews, Job Offers and Background Process begin in October 2025. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.
  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
  • Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must possess a Universal Certificate in Refrigerant Transition and Recovery from an E.P.A. approved program AND two (2) years of journey-level experience independently installing, maintaining, repairing, and rebuilding commercial refrigeration and air conditioning systems and related equipment. OR
  • Four years as a Building Maintenance Engineer with the County of San Diego and possess an HVAC Certificate.

NOTE: A valid California class C driver's license, which must be maintained throughout employment in this class is required at time of appointment, or the ability to arrange necessary and timely transportation for field travel. Employees in this class may be required to use their own vehicle.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed both indoors, outdoors, and sometimes in inclement weather conditions. Working conditions include frequent exposure to moisture, electrical hazards, fumes, and cramped workspace; may be exposed to hazards of building maintenance (i.e., lead, asbestos, etc.). Incumbents are required to wear protective breathing apparatus and may be subject to emergency overtime and/or callback work.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT

As part of the County of San Diego's pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position. Current County employees may be excluded from this process.
