Originally serving underground coal mining, we have expanded our capabilities to support a wide range of industrial and energy sectors across the United States and worldwide.

We are currently seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team. This role combines mechanical design expertise with practical manufacturing engineering knowledge to develop, optimize, and support the production of precision-machined components and assemblies. The ideal candidate will bridge the gap between design and manufacturing, ensuring efficient, cost-effective production while maintaining high quality standards. This position works in a team environment at CR Machine in Madisonville, KY. This is not a remote position.

This position reports to the General Manager of CRMS.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed mechanical designs, 3D models, and 2D drawings for components and assemblies using CAD software.
  • Collaborate with customers, design engineers, and production teams to translate design concepts into manufacturable products.
  • Create and maintain documentation including BOMs, process flow charts, and work instructions.
  • Support prototyping, testing, and validation of new designs.
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing issues related to tooling, fixtures, and assembly processes.
  • Assist in developing tooling, jigs, and fixtures necessary for production.
  • Perform reverse engineering of existing components and assemblies to recreate technical drawings, specifications, and manufacturing processes.
  • Work closely with quality and production teams to address non-conformances and implement corrective actions.
  • Stay up to date with industry trends, materials, and technologies relevant to machining and manufacturing.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and lean manufacturing practices.

Qualifications & Competencies

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (Autodesk Inventor).
  • Experience in mechanical design and manufacturing process development, preferably in machining or fabrication environments.
  • Strong understanding of machining processes, materials, tolerances, GD&T, and quality standards.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing workflows, tooling design, and process optimization.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems and document control.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 quality standards is advantageous.
  • Experience in the underground coal mining industry is a plus.
  • Ability to work under deadlines and manage multiple projects.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily office-based with frequent visits to the production floor.
  • Occasional travel to mine sites to gather project information and perform on-site measurements or assessments.
