Summary: Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled and unskilled tasks and the operation of light and/or heavy equipment in the construction, maintenance, and repair of roads, bridges, culverts, drainage systems, and other public utilities. Operates light and heavy equipment as directed or based on clearly defined procedures and practices.

Duties & Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions: Works as a crew member and equipment operator in tearing up and laying down roads; repairs and patches roads, filling edges with slag or cold mix; hauls limestone, slag, sand, and cold mix to build or repair roads; sets pipe for culverts; grades crew-set pipe, places slag over pipe and packs it down; inspects and corrects road base failure; repairs pot and sink holes; maintains rights-of-way, drainage systems, and culverts. Operates grade-all, motor grader, pulverizer, chip spreaders, dump trucks, rubber tire self propel, rollers, back hoe, front end loader and other equipment; installs cement culverts; digs ditches; repairs bridges; pours cement for roadways, driveways, and parking lots; mows grass on road shoulders with gang mowers; makes, replaces, and installs road signs; performs routine equipment maintenance on trucks and equipment; barricades, channels, and flags traffic around construction sites.

Other Job Functions: Performs other job related duties as directed.

Education & Experience

Education & Experience: Two (2) years experience in performing construction, maintenance, and repair work, including the operation and maintenance of light and heavy equipment. Experience as an equipment mechanic and welding experience is preferred. High School diploma or GED preferred.

Specialized Requirements: Commercial driver's license and acceptable driving record. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of safety practices and basic skills in operating appropriate equipment prior to appointment. May be subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge, Skills & Other Characteristics: Knowledge of: appropriate skilled trades; safe and proper use of hand and power tools for construction and maintenance work; principles of construction technology as it relates to assigned construction, maintenance, and repair activity i.e., road building. Skill in: communicating effectively, orally and in writing; performing manual work requiring periods of intensive exertion and potential exposure to adverse weather conditions; operation of appropriate light and heavy equipment; using tact and courtesy in dealing with County personnel and the public; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with County personnel and the public.

Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily outside. Worker is subject to adverse weather and environmental conditions, including temperature extremes, humidity, and precipitation; noise and vibration from heavy equipment; physical hazards from moving machinery, equipment with moving parts, and traffic; atmospheric conditions from dust, fumes and chemicals.

Physical Requirements: Job duties require heavy work; may move materials and equipment in excess of 100 lbs. by lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; constant standing and/or walking (more than 75 percent of the time) is required. Duties require appropriate safety precautions.
