The City of Valdez Public Works Department is looking for a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator to keep our community moving year-round.
This unique position splits time between:
- Street Division (October-April): Clearing snow in one of the snowiest cities in the U.S. and keeping vital roads safe and open.
- Solid Waste Division (April-October): Operating equipment at the landfill and surrounding areas, with a key role in the community's scrap metal collection program.
As a Heavy Equipment Operator, you'll be trusted to handle a variety of machines, tackle challenging Alaskan conditions, and play a vital role in maintaining city operations. This is a DOT-regulated position subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 18 years or older
- High School Diploma or GED
- Class B CDL
- At least 1 year of heavy equipment operating experience

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operates heavy equipment and other machinery for the removal of snow from and the maintenance of streets, parking lots, sidewalks, bridges, landfill, and public areas,
- Performs duties to maintain landfill as necessary
- Remains available on 24-hour emergency call as needed.
- Complies with all safety rules and regulations.
- Inventories and requests parts, supplies and equipment replacements as necessary.
- Works with contractors, city customers, and city departments.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in internal and external environments with exposure to inclement weather and varying temperatures. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, materials and airborne and blood borne pathogens, and frequent walking, bending and lifting. Employee may be called out to work off-shift in emergency situations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A High School Diploma or GED equivalent; and one (1) year heavy equipment operation or street maintenance experience.
Must possess and maintain a valid Alaska Class B CDL driver's license with the ability to obtain a Class A CDL within one year of date of hire.
