Function:

The mechanical engineer supports our customers, project managers, and sales staff by providing positive experiences, sound advice, technical support, arrangement drawings, fabrication drawings, process and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID), 3D models, and 3D scans. The mechanical engineer evaluates applications of equipment, sizes equipment, ductwork and piping, supports project estimation, and troubleshoots mechanical equipment issues at customer facilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Support design-build projects at all company locations from project definition, 3D scan and takeoff/estimating through 3D model, General Arrangements, fabrication drawings, P&IDs and a clean hand-off with project management.
  • Create a positive experience through the service and support of people.
  • Represent Rasmussen Mechanical Services as the preferred mechanical service provider for customers, employees, and business partners. Maintain the highest level of business ethics, thereby increasing customer, employee, and business partner loyalty.
  • Assist with development and management of an engineering documentation standard.
  • Be a technical advisor inside and outside the company for mechanical systems. This will require study of code publications and performance of calculations.
  • Perform consultation sales support and project support including travel with occasional overnight stays.
  • Analyze pictures, drawings, specifications, project requirements, client needs, etc. in an engineering capacity to prepare solutions and estimates for projects.
  • Provide customers with solutions for performance enhancement and proactive resolution of issues. Assist with development of solutions and presentation of proposals to customers. Evaluate cost effectiveness, return on investment calculations, pictures, drawings, specifications, duct and line sizing, equipment sizing, site review and other documents.
  • Solicit support and communicate effectively with other departments to deepen internal and customer relationships. Maintain excellent relationships with field personnel.
  • Maintain project engineering document control (Job File), including:
  • Drawings & submittals
  • P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams)
  • PID (Piping and instrumentation Diagram) / PFDs (Process Flow Diagrams)
  • GAs (General Arrangements)
  • Fabrication drawings
  • Piping line classes and Isometrics
  • Project close-out documentation including as built drawings.
  • Ensure compliance with company standards of quality, cost, safety, timeliness, and performance. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal legal requirements.
  • Inspect customer facilities and determine solutions to fit customers needs. Primarily, inspections will involve Boiler room equipment, HVACR, Chillers, hydronic systems, ductwork and air handling systems.
  • Work with project management to determine manpower and material requirements for projects based on the complexity of the work relative to the capabilities of available field personnel and the planned or promised completion time.
  • Solicit quotes from, issue purchase orders to, and coordinate with suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Communicate with internal and external customers to ensure their needs are being met throughout the project. Follow up after projects to ensure satisfactory completion of work and ask for additional work and referrals.
  • Achieve high levels of customer satisfaction. Resolve customer concerns and complaints in a timely, efficient and cost-effective manner. Exceed customer expectations.
  • Develop relationships with engineers and general contractors to partner with our company on projects.
  • Exemplify and reinforce company safety policies and procedures and resolve workplace safety issues to ensure a safe work environment where all required and/or appropriate safety measures are in place. This may include job site audits of safe work practices.
  • Maintain product knowledge with representatives and local suppliers to stay abreast of product lines and equipment.
  • Maintain and improve industry expertise through self-study, product seminars, company-provided training, and self-improvement courses.
  • Occasionally provide sales and marketing support at trade shows, lunch-and-learns, and seminars.
  • Develop and maintain product design, sizing and documentation information for all products manufactured by the company.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education/Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in engineering (Mechanical preferred) or equivalent professional experience.
  • Professional and industry-specific certifications and licenses.

Experience:

  • One (1) year of Mechanical Engineering experience or quality internships are required. Experience involving 2D and 3D drafting software, heat exchanger performance, piping systems and specifications, and boiler systems preferred.

  • Great people skills to work closely with management, sales, purchasing, accounting, and field personnel within the Company; as well as with vendors, customers, subcontractors, etc. outside the Company.
  • A desire to continually learn new methods; adopt, accept and apply new technology from internal or external resources and continually strive to identify more efficient ways to perform existing processes.
  • Challenge the status quo and motivate other team members, openly taking into account the ideas and suggestions of others and incorporating constructive suggestions into practice.

Physical & Mental Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift 25-30 lbs. / sit for long periods of time / type / hear / see / speak English clearly / operate business equipment.
  • Must be able to read / write / spell & calculate. Must be able to understand and follow written instructions, communicate effectively orally and written, and must be able to listen effectively.
  • Must possess prioritizing / organizational / multitasking and stress management skills.
  • Must possess a valid drivers license.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen.
