Equipment Operator I

The Colorado Springs Public Works division is ready to welcome MULTIPLE Equipment Operator I's to their dynamic team! As an Equipment Operator you will perform semi-skilled maintenance tasks for the City's Public Works Department.

This job announcement will remain open until all positions are filled.

Available Teams & Key Duties:

Drainage Team - Operate and maintain heavy machinery for installation, maintenance, and repair of drainage systems. Tasks include excavation, land clearing, and infrastructure maintenance to manage water flow, prevent flooding, and ensure public safety.

Street Sweeper Team - Operate street sweeping equipment to keep roads clean, improve safety, and prevent pollutants from entering the stormwater system. Duties include routine sweeping and debris removal.

Keep It Clean COS Team - Support city beautification and cleanliness initiatives. Duties include street cleaning, graffiti removal, public space maintenance, and assisting with neighborhood clean-ups and greening projects. Learn more about this team: Keep It Clean COS | City of Colorado Springs

Concrete Finisher Team - Perform labor and equipment operation for the placement, installation, and repair of sidewalks, curbs, gutters, ramps, and other concrete construction projects.

Signs & Markings Team - Construct, install, and maintain traffic signs and pavement markings. Operate specialized equipment, conduct inspections, and ensure compliance with city traffic safety standards.

Pavement Team - Operate asphalt rollers, pavers, and skid steers to repair and maintain streets, sidewalks, and alleys. Responsibilities include job site safety, equipment inspections, and assisting with project planning.

Anticipated Schedule: 6:30AM - 5:00PM. Either Monday - Thursday or Tuesday - Friday depending on crew assignment after hire.

Job Type: Full-time; non-exempt

Hiring Range: $21.78 - $26.14

As an Equipment Operator I, you will:

  • Operate single/tandem axle dump trucks, plows, and sanders during snow removal.
  • Transport materials and equipment to/from work sites.
  • Safely use, service, and make minor repairs to tools and equipment.
  • Perform manual labor such as shoveling, debris removal, and site clean-up.
  • Assist other Public Works teams as business needs require.
  • Follow all safety procedures and maintain accurate work records.

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of the basic operation and maintenance requirements of power-driven equipment
  • Knowledge of practices, methods, and materials used in general construction
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices
  • Ability to perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year of professional, full-time experience in general construction, manual labor or a related field
  • Possess and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver's license not subject to restrictions
  • Possess, or obtain within one year of hire, and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado CDL Class B driver's license which is not subject to restrictions
