HVAC Technician - Department of Administrative Services

What You'll Do: As an HVAC Technician, you'll take on a wide variety of responsibilities, including:

  • Installing, operating, maintaining, and repairing heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and ventilation systems.

  • Managing and troubleshooting building automation systems (BAS), ensuring hardware and software function effectively and upgrades are installed as needed.

  • Conducting inspections, tests, and diagnostics to identify issues, perform preventative maintenance, and ensure equipment is operating safely and efficiently.

  • Repairing and replacing system components such as boilers, chillers, compressors, pumps, ductwork, motors, valves, and controls.

  • Reviewing blueprints, compiling material estimates, and completing related project paperwork.

  • Communicating with customers to assess issues, explain solutions, and ensure high-quality service delivery.

This position offers a wide scope of work-from gas and steam boilers to chilled water systems and refrigeration units-so no two days are alike. You'll work independently but also be part of a supportive team that values safety, reliability, and technical skill.

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting 30 semester hours of accredited post high school education in HVAC for each year of the required experience to a maximum substitution of two years.

  • Within a period of time as determined by the appointing authority, persons in this class may be required to obtain a license to perform electrical work in accordance with Chapter 103, Iowa Code.
  • Within a period of time as determined by the appointing authority, certain employees in this class may be required to obtain a Fire Sprinkler Installer and Maintenance License in accordance with Chapter 100D, Iowa Code.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to obtain Class B commercial driver's license.
  • Must be able to obtain certifications as required by regulatory authorities pertaining to HVAC, boilers, and refrigeration.
  • Must be capable of obtaining forklift and other material handling equipment operator's permits as necessary.

NOTE: Must be willing to work weekends and after hours on a rotational basis performing boiler operations and must be willing to respond to alarm pager on weekends and after hours on a rotational basis.
