Position Summary The Senior Business Development Manager supports the firmwide Intellectual Property (IP) practice to lead and drive their business development and marketing efforts. The Senior Business Development Manager will work with practice leadership and key partners practicing in IP, in addition to business development colleagues in a broader BD function dedicated to the firm's disputes-related practice areas. This is a high-profile role, and we are looking for someone who has the gravitas and expertise to drive growth, influence and motivate lawyers across the Intellectual Property practice and successfully assist in building client relationships and brand. This highly detailed and organized professional will provide strategic and tactical support to drive revenue through a full spectrum of marketing and BD efforts. The successful candidate will consult key partners on their vision for initiatives and thought-leadership activity. This individual will carry through with project planning and ROI measurement, staying close to market trends and maintaining an awareness of competitors. This role includes the supervision of one BD Coordinator. Job Duties and Responsibilities Strategic Planning and Execution: Develop and implement business development and marketing strategies for the IP practice, including contributing to the group's annual marketing plan and long-term strategic goals. Client Development and Opportunity Assessment: Identify and evaluate new business opportunities based on market trends and the firm's strengths. Lead strategic initiatives from concept through execution, ensuring measurable return on investment. Pitch and Credential Management: Lead the creation of compelling client pitches, proposals, and marketing materials. Develop and maintain key credentials that highlight the group's experience and capabilities. Market Intelligence and Insight: Serve as a resource on IP-related legal, industry, and business trends. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of major clients, significant matters, industry groups, and practice-specific content. Partner Support and Performance Tracking: Provide dedicated business development support to IP partners. Monitor, assess, and report on the effectiveness of business development plans and activities. Research and Competitive Analysis: Collaborate with firm resources to prepare insights on market conditions, industry competition, client opportunities, internal financials, and pitch performance. Public Relations Coordination: Partner with the PR team to ensure high-profile matters and strategic initiatives are promoted in alignment with the firm's communications strategy. Key Client Strategy Development: Support strategic business development planning for key clients in coordination with Client Relationship Leaders and the firm's client targeting efforts. Event and Program Management: Oversee the planning and execution of events, seminars, sponsorships, webinars, and podcasts in partnership with the Business Development Coordinator and the firm's events team. Cross-Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively with colleagues across the business development, marketing, proposals, and communications teams, contributing to a cohesive and energetic firm-wide effort. Requirements Education: Bachelor's degree in business, marketing or related field preferred. JD and/or MBA strongly preferred. Experience: 5+ years of directly relevant experience in a marketing or business development-related position, including experience in a large law firm or professional services firm. A strong business development and marketing acumen and basic legal substantive knowledge is required. Skills: Strong oral and written communications skills with the ability to interact at various levels with confidence and with a customer service attitude. Strong computer skills including advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Must be highly organized with the ability to multi-task, manage workload and competing priorities and pay close attention to details. Must be able to think critically and creatively, present ideas and views clearly and with confidence to people at all levels, including partners and clients. Must be able to demonstrate initiative, be flexible and adaptable and be a team player. Must have a strong focus on customer service delivery while dealing with a variety of personalities and being sensitive to cultural differences and issues. Exceptional organzied and time management skills. Keen problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities and solutions-oriented thinking. Ability to have a customer-focused mindset and deliver high-quality service or solutions to internal or external stakeholders. Must have Flexibility and adaptability to navigate changes, unexpected challenges, and evolving priorities. Ability to exercise sound judgment to recommend and effectuate decisions. Other Supervisory Responsibilities: This role will supervise a BD Coordinator and liaise with other junior team members as necessary. Equipment To Be Used: Personal computer and other office equipment such as telephone, calculator, fax, machine, copier, scanner, etc. Essential Job Functions: Ability to utilize technology, including computers and telecommunication devices. Ability to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods, intense eye usage, and finger, hand and wrist dexterity associated with prolonged computer use. Ability to read and interpret written documents, computer screens and other visual displays accurately. Ability to hear and understand verbal communication, including conversations and instructions, is important for effective collaboration and communication. Ability to handle multiple tasks and diverse work problems on a daily basis and complete assignments within set timelines. Ability to use independent judgment and discretion and adapt to changing work situations. Must be able to travel for meetings and events as required. Must work in office as required. Working Conditions: You will be required to work in the office at minimum 3 days per week. Occasionally called upon to work hours in excess of your normal daily schedule. The details of your weekly schedule will be discussed further with your direct supervisor. Pay Ranges: This represents the presently-anticipated low and high end of Reed Smith's pay range for this position. Actual pay may vary based on various factors, including but not limited to location and experience.
