Lead Diesel Mechanic & Shop Manager

Location: Proctor, MN

Compensation: $85,000-100,000 base salary (DOE) + Annual Performance Bonus

About the Role

We are seeking a hands-on, experienced Lead Diesel Mechanic to oversee the daily maintenance and management of our fleet of 40+ hauling trucks and other equipment. This role is perfect for someone who can split their time between leading and training a small but growing team and rolling up their sleeves in the shop. Youll be responsible for diagnosing and repairing diesel trucks, mentoring junior techs, scheduling service needs, and collaborating with our in-house fabrication team.

Youll work closely with fleet operations and eventually help bridge the gap between the shop floor and internal leadership. This is a growth-focused position for someone looking to expand into a leadership or hybrid management/mechanic role.

What Youll Do

  • This is a hands-on WORKING Mechanic and Shop Manager position. You will be expected to manually perform the physical and technical work in addition to the leadership work.
  • Manage the daily maintenance and service needs of a fleet of trash and recycle trucks.
  • Inspect, diagnose and repair electrical, hydraulic, suspension, brake and air systems on a wide range of vehicles and equipment.
  • Review and diagnose driver-reported truck issues and determine whether to handle in-house or outsource.
  • Conduct and oversee quick fixes vs. long-term mechanical solutions.
  • Schedule repairs, maintenance, and production timelines.
  • Inspects the quality of outside/supplier repairs and or rebuilds. Assesses structural damage and assigns needed repairs utilizing the most appropriate method(s).
  • Perform and oversee hand-wiring and installation of camera systems, automated arm systems, and electrical components.
  • Provide hands-on technical support and training to team members.
  • Brief and lead techs on daily service plans.
  • Work alongside the fabrication facility team for customized fixes and system builds.
  • Safety checks on vehicles the safety of every single employee and the people in our communities is our number one priority.
  • Foster communication between shop staff and corporate as the organization grows.
  • Perform your work within our Standard Labor Repair Times (SRTs).
  • Manage clerical record keeping of maintenance schedules, tasks, and truck service items electronically and hard copy.
  • Maintains a clean, safe work area in compliance with Corporate / OSHA Standards and perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures.

What Were Looking For

  • Minimum 10 years experience in a mechanic shop (diesel required).
  • Experience managing or leading teams strongly preferred.
  • Strong electrical diagnostic and wiring experience (camera systems, wiring harness systems, sensors, etc.).
  • Maintains advanced knowledge of, and strong skill proficiency in, the following vehicle components and systems, with the ability to perform complex repair maintenance functions:
  • Chassis component repair and maintenance.
  • Refuse bodies, including control, hydraulic and electrical systems; Air braking systems.
  • Engine repair diagnosis and perform maintenance.
  • Suspension, drivetrain and steering systems.
  • Heating and air conditioning systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair both minor and complex issues.
  • Comfortable with fabrication shop collaboration and interpreting driver feedback.
  • Must be comfortable transitioning between hands-on mechanic work and team/maintenance oversight.
  • Self-starter with the ability to lead and train others.
  • Desktop computer use and knowledge of Microsoft Office platform and products.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned or apparent.
