We are actively seeking an experienced Marine/Waterfront Structural Engineer to join our New York City (Midtown Manhattan) office. The ideal candidate will have experience in marine / waterfront engineering and will have experience with or learn inspection services and field-related activities . As the successful new hire, you will perform project planning of inspections and design waterfront structures projects, including heavy lift cargo ports, marine terminals, vessel mooring and berthing structures, bulkheads, marinas and bridge protection structures. You will also learn to perform structural assessments in the field and may be invited to participate in our inspection and rehabilitation team as a Certified Engineer Diver. As an Engineer Diver, you would be part of a team that evaluates marine structures through above and underwater engineering inspections, follow-on report preparation and development of structural repair designs. You will utilize modern workflows that include field tablets, UAS (drones), nondestructive testing and evaluation, marine mapping and imaging, analysis and modeling tools. We perform these inspections for marine terminal operators, private clients, states, municipalities, the US Navy and many more!

Being an ADCI certified Engineer Diver requires physical conditioning and strength. It also requires an additional 8 to 14 weeks of off-site intense training (company paid). The ideal candidate for this position will have a proven passion for water including significant experience with water-based activities such as PADI scuba certified diving, free diving, swimming, boating, surfing, etc. with a strong interest in working outdoors and perhaps proven mechanical, equipment repair or building skills.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Participates in and assists with the planning of site investigations of waterfront infrastructure such as marine structures, marinas, ports, container terminals, water control structures, etc.
  • Structural analysis and design with timber, steel, concrete and composite materials
  • Assists the team so that scopes of work are fulfilled and that contracted deliverables are submitted on schedule and within budget
  • Works collaboratively with all members of the inspection teams, design teams, and other engineering disciplines
  • Analyzes aged or damaged components of marine structures to assess load capacity
  • Actively assists in writing technical reports and manuals as needed
  • Understands and maintains proficiency with State, Federal, and local agency design standards and criteria, practices, and policies
  • Prepares plans, specifications, cost estimates and supporting documentation
  • Assists in proposals and cost estimates
  • If successfully completes dive certification, you will perform frequent inspections utilizing commercial diving methods and techniques while adhering to field operation standards and safety procedures
  • Ensures safety at all times and adheres to Moffatt & Nichol’s Quality Management System (QMS)
  • Performs other duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with Structural coursework required
  • Master’s degree in Structural Engineering preferred but not required
  • Professional Engineer licensure required. A license in New York is desired within 12 months of hire
  • 4 to 6 years of waterfront structural design experience required; related heavy civil or marine infrastructure field experience preferred but not required
  • Proven interest/experience in water-based activities including but not limited to: PADI scuba certified diving, free diving, boating, swimming, surfing, etc. as well as mechanical, equipment repair or building skills
  • Confined space entry experience preferred
  • Employee obtaining PADI scuba diving certification in advance of going to dive school is required
  • Dive school is company paid (including tuition, housing, per diem and rental car), physically demanding and requires the employee to be away at a training facility for 8 to 14 weeks
  • Possess a valid driver's license in good standing
  • Ability and willingness to travel (approximately 20%) both domestically and internationally as required. Most work is local and does not require overnight stays
  • Boater Safety Card preferred
  • Possess DBIDS card or eligibility to successfully pass background check to secure Department of Defense DBIDS card and other badges required by clients
  • Possession of or ability to obtain within a couple months of hire a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • Current First Aid, CPR, AED, and Oxygen Administration certification preferred
  • Selected candidate must consent to and pass a post-offer/pre-employment drug screening
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Base salary range:

$104,000 to $128,000* based on years of experience, level of education obtained, professional registration, and meeting the required qualifications in the job description. In addition to salary, Moffatt & Nichol also offers generous rope access and dive pay along with a personal equipment reimbursement program.

*Base salary range only applicable for candidates who will be hired and working in the New York City market.

  • Office work requires ongoing design work requiring focus
  • Field work requires diving in waters and exposure to extreme elements
  • Must be able to move among a variety of simultaneous priorities
  • Some extended days, evenings, and weekend work requirements

Physical requirements:

This role requires the incumbent to be in excellent physical condition:

  • ADCI (or equivalent) diving requires specific physical conditioning and strength
  • Field work requires incumbent to carry diving and inspection equipment over unpaved, rural, and unmarked terrain
  • The incumbent must be able to lift, carry, climb, and navigate in a small boat
