Job Description
JOB TITLE: Electrician I CLASSIFICATION: Nonexempt REPORTS TO: Supervisor of Electricians and Painters PAY GRADE: Aux 9 / 242 Days LOCATION: Maintenance/Operations DATE REVISED: 10/4/2017
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Skilled and independent work in the repair, maintenance, preventive maintenance, and installation of electrical systems, services, and equipment for the district. Maintain and provide for the safe condition and operation of all electrical fixtures and systems in district facilities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
- High School diploma or GED
- Texas Journeyman Electrician License
- Must maintain valid Texas drivers license and insurable driving record
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work
- Thorough knowledge of the installation, repair and maintenance of electrical systems common to school buildings
- Knowledge of electrical circuits and wiring and operating principles of motors
- Knowledge of local electrical codes
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions and to read blueprints, schematics, and written reference material
- Ability to read and write and have communication skills necessary to converse with various types of persons
- Considerable skills in locating and correcting defects related to building structures
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations
- Ability to diagnose and resolve problems
- Ability to use hand and power tools
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
Experience:
- Five years experience as journeyman electrician preferred
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Maintenance and Repair
- Install and repair wiring, electrical fixtures, power equipment, and components of machinery and equipment following electrical code, manuals, specifications, schematics, and blueprints.
- Install and repair control and distribution apparatus, including motors, relays, switches, thermostats, circuit-breaker panels, etc.
- Install and connect power supply wiring, cables, conduit, and electrical apparatus for machines and equipment in new and existing facilities following diagrams, schematics, or blueprints.
- Diagnose and resolve problems in electrical circuits, systems, and equipment using testing instruments and equipment.
- Test continuity of circuits to ensure compatibility and safety of components using testing instruments.
- Measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble, and install electrical conduit using rulers, measuring devices, hand tools, pipe threader, and conduit bender.
- Repair or recommend replacement of electrical appliances, including commercial ovens, ranges, steam tables, washers, dryers, etc.
- Receive and complete work orders.
- Select material and hardware and make time and materials estimates.
- Maintain accurate records on material and labor used.
- Maintain inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials.
- Inspect jobs upon completion and ensure areas are clean.
- Work with building principals and supervisors to complete projects.
- Detect needed repairs on buildings, grounds, and equipment following established inspection procedures.
- Manage assigned work orders, maintaining material and labor costs applied to each job.
- Show accountability for supplies purchased or issued.
- Meet performance standards.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and well-organized facility and work area.
- Perform scheduled and emergency repairs and/or maintenance as directed.
- Carry out all duties in accordance with BISD Board of Education policies and administrative regulations.
- Maintain a high personal standard in the following areas: attitude, cooperation, dependability, judgment, initiative, self-improvement, and as a role model for students.
- Respond to emergency calls as needed.
- Stay current with yearly certification requirements.
Safety
- Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment.
- Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
- Ensure that equipment is in safe operating condition.
- Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing. Operate equipment and use tools according to established safety procedures.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
Other
- Perform other duties as assigned.
EQUIPMENT USED:
- Vehicle; multimeter, ohmmeter, oscilloscope, and testing equipment; soldering iron; wire puller; pipe bender and threader; torpedo level; hand and power tools (saw, drill, etc.); trencher; jackhammer; concrete saw; ladder, scaffolds, and personnel lifts
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Mental Demands
- Maintain emotional control under stress
- Work with frequent interruptions
- May be required to work nights or protracted hours
Physical Demands
- Heavy lifting and carrying with minimum floor to knuckle lift of 75 lbs
- Substantial amount of walking, standing, kneeling, bending, climbing, squatting some shoveling
- Work in tiring and uncomfortable positions
- Operation of a motor vehicle
Environmental Demands
- Work outside and inside: exposure to hot and cold temperatures, and exposure to excessive humidity
- Work around electrical power lines
- Exposure to a small amount of fumes from silicone, glues and adhesives, dust, noise, solvents, grease, oil, paints, primers and paint thinners
- Working with ladders, scaffolds and personnel lifts
- Working around moving parts of machinery and electrical hazards
- Frequent districtwide travel
