AIRPORT MAINTENANCE OPERATOR II - 3010

PAY RANGE - $20.92 - $29.83/hr- plus a comprehensive benefits package
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Performs grounds and facility maintenance and ground landscaping on the land side of the Airport; performs directly related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The principal function of an employee in this class is to keep the Airport grounds and facilities in a clean, safe and pleasant condition. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an Airport/Airside Maintenance Supervisor, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. This class is distinguished from the class of Airport Maintenance Operator I by the performance of lead worker duties and specialized heavy equipment operation. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with other Airport workers, other City employees, Airport tenants, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in a structure and out of doors, often in extreme weather conditions.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL WORK:
- Serves as a lead worker in the performance of custodial and lawn care duties;
- Performs varied activities in caring for lawns, plants and trees around the Airport premises;
- Operates heavy equipment including but not limited to street sweeper, ten-wheel dump truck, loader, backhoe, plow truck, sander and small lawn and snow removal equipment;
- Enforces Airport security regulations;
- Serves as a member of the emergency response team;
- Serves as a member of the Airport Building Technician work team;
- Monitors custodial work and equipment;
- Sets up rooms for meetings and conferences;
- Reports any incidents or accidents at the Airport;
- Provides guidance and demonstrations to new employees in similar positions;
- Keeps supervisors informed of work progress, issues, and potential solutions;
- Attends meetings and training to stay current on relevant practices and developments;
- Responds to citizen inquiries courteously and promptly;
- Coordinates regularly with others to enhance interdepartmental efficiency; and
- Performs additional duties as required by the classification.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Some knowledge of landscaping techniques and practices;
- Some knowledge and skill in the operation of heavy equipment;
- Ability to learn and apply FAA safety and security regulations;
- Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
- Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures and instructions;
- Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
- Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
- Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
- Integrity, ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
- Graduation from High School or possession of a GED; and
- Zero to two years of experience in custodial, landscaping, and heavy equipment operation; or
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.
REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL-B) - (Must obtain license within six months of date of hire);
- On call status.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
- Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to understand department and safety rules and regulations and work around high traffic areas;
- Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to work safely in heavy traffic and heavy equipment operation;
- Sufficient manual dexterity with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate hand and power tools continuously and push, pull, reach and grasp repetitively;
- Sufficient strength and endurance with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate hand and power tools continuously and to lift and carry, through a full range of motion, up to 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds continuously;
- Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to visit construction sites throughout assigned Airport locations and the ability to climb, crawl, stoop, kneel, crouch, stand, walk, in tight places and otherwise move through and around all construction and maintenance sites.
