Works under the supervision and direction of the Facility Administrator maintaining the City of Florence landfill. Operates various heavy equipment in the day-to-day landfill operation and during landfill construction or maintenance projects. Light welding as required for maintenance and repairs. Directs solid waste personnel and other customers to appropriate disposal sites.
- Assists in solving customer problems and complaints.
- Operates track loaders and dozers, landfill compactors, scrapers, backhoes, road graders, mowers with attachments, and other equipment assigned to the department.
- Responsible for daily refuse compaction, cover, and other landfill maintenance.
- Covers refuse in accordance with the City of Florence, State of Alabama (ADEM), and Federal regulations and guidelines.
- Prepares landfill sites in accordance with ADEM regulations and engineering plans.
- Responsible for directing waste haulers to appropriate disposal sites.
- Must be able to recognize waste brought into landfills by customers.
- Must be able to prevent improper waste from being left at the landfill and report these issues immediately to a supervisor.
- Keeps scavengers and unauthorized people out of the landfill.
- Responsible for maintaining a safe working environment for both customers and landfill personnel.
- Maintain records of landfill use as directed by supervision.
- Assists in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment.
- Ensures that daily preventative maintenance is performed on vehicles and equipment.
- Responsible for minor repairs to dumpster containers and other light welding as required by the Solid Waste Department.
- Represent the department and the City of Florence in a friendly, tactful, and courteous manner.
- Report problems to the Landfill Supervisor.
- May be required to drive a Commercial or Residential garbage truck on routes.
- Performs other assigned duties: Shifts may vary according to the needs of the city
- Three years of experience operating heavy equipment with city or related experience in the field.
- High School diploma, GED certificate, or experience in a related field.
- Must have a valid driver's license but prefer a valid Class B commercial driver's license with air brakes endorsement.
- Knowledge of department rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of ADEM rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of the City of Florence streets.
- Ability to see that projects are completed in a complete, timely, orderly, and safe manner.
- Ability to read and understand topographic maps and plans and to translate them into the construction and maintenance of the landfill.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment assigned to the Department and to work close to above- and underground utilities.
- Ability to perform final grading.
- Ability to handle customer problems in a firm, friendly, and tactful manner.
- Knowledge of traffic safety rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of safety rules and regulations that apply to working in and around vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to read, write, and understand material related to the position
Supervision:
Individuals may be required to work independently and without direct supervision.
Physical Demands (with or without accommodations):
- Ability to work under stressful situations.
- Ability to work with constant exposure to heat, cold, dampness, noise, vibration, and other disagreeable work conditions.
- Ability to stoop, bend, and lift on a regular basis up to 50 pounds (more on occasion).
- Ability to work in and around moving traffic.
- Subject to be called out after normal working hours.
