Carpenter - Akron Public Schools

Maintain all Akron Public Schools Buildings; repair, build from scratch, modify or retro-fit any project; provide a safe and functional environment for students and staff; operate power tools and equipment properly and safely. An employee in this class performs skilled work.

• Perform skilled carpentry work involving the construction, alteration and/or repair of floors, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, windows, wood fixtures, furniture and dry wall.

• Perform skilled benchwork in the operation of a large variety of power carpentry equipment.

• Install/rebuild/repair a large variety of educationally related equipment, e.g. chalkboards, bulletin boards, gym equipment, library furniture, student/teacher desks, student lockers, floor tile and acoustic ceiling tile.

• Build concrete block forms and perform related masonry tasks.

• Performs carpentry work in general building maintenance including, altering or repairing floors, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, window, screens, wood fixtures and furniture.

• Perform skilled benchwork using power equipment.

• Keep equipment in repaired and in prime operating condition.

• Install or repair floor tile and acoustic ceiling tile.

• Build concrete block forms and perform related masonry tasks.

• Install and repair mechanical gym equipment e.g. bleachers, backboards, and exercising devices.

• Repair furniture and apply plastic laminate.

• Perform skilled cabinet work.

• Apply finish to repaired furniture.

• Repair roof leaks and prepare roof surfaces for application of waterproof coatings.

• Grade lumber for proper usage in filling materials requests for carpenters expediting a variety of tasks in the field.

• Erect scaffolding.

• Meet with prospective customers to provide skill developing projects.

• Meet with the advisory committee and implement recommendations.

• Order needed building and carpentry supplies and materials.

• Draw up plans and complete estimates for projects.

• Construct needed school items.

• Prepare required reports for supervisor.

• Make contacts with the public with tact and diplomacy.

• Work on long-range tool maintenance and replacement project.

• Interact with superintendent and/or board of education and present information as requested.

• Perform related duties as assigned by the Carpenter Foreman.

• Lubricate and maintain carpenter shop equipment.

• Crate machinery for shipment.

• Supervise employees of lower grade.

• Graduation from an accredited High School or G.E.D.

• A minimum of three years' paid experience in the carpentry trade as it pertains to building maintenance; including paid experience in the operation of power equipment used in the carpentry trade.

• State of Ohio Driver's License.

• Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.

• Ability to listen effectively and actively.

• Ability to problem solve.

• Skilled in concrete flat footer, and foundation completion.

• Skilled in block laying.

• Skilled in floor, sidewall, and rafter framing.

• Skilled in basic carpentry math.

• Skilled in plastic laminating, and other skills such as roofing in residential housing.

• Ability to use hand and power tools safely.

• Ability to work with the general public as customers.

• Ability to work independently.

• Ability to work effectively with others.

• Ability to read and understand verbal and written instruction, written warnings and labels.

• Ability to read and interpret schematics, diagrams and blueprints.

• Knowledge of methods, standard practices, occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

• Skilled in the use of tools, machinery and equipment of the trade.

• Knowledge of carpentry materials including the ability to inspect lumber for grade quality and use.

This is a classified position.

The selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for education and experience. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience. TEST WEIGHTS: Competitive Examination 70%, Education 20%, Experience 10%.

Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.

NOTE: The competitive examination may be suspended if shown to be impractical because of an insufficient number of qualified candidates. The candidates will then be ranked in a standard manner based on 70% for qualifying, 20% for education, and 10% for experience.

VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to his/her passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.

Since this examination is posted on a combined basis, two separate eligibility lists will be generated with promotional candidates considered before open candidates.
