Responsible for the maintenance and repair of all City machinery, equipment, and vehicles. Repairs, services, and maintains all City machinery, equipment, and vehicles. Performs preventive maintenance and inspections. Provides engine tune-up and diagnostic electrical system checks. Makes service calls on City machinery, equipment, and vehicles. Maintains shop equipment and tools. Prepares estimates and maintains records, parts, and materials needed for repair. Maintains an inventory of all parts and supplies on hand, and records of parts and supplies to be purchased or have been purchased. Requests orders for needed parts and supplies. Makes major and minor overhauls and repairs to diesel and gasoline engines used to power equipment. Diagnoses the source of trouble and determines the extent of repairs required as specified in manufacturer's manuals; disassembles and adjusts components to prescribed operating tolerances by using specialized testing equipment. Performs Electrical Arc and Oxyacetylene Welding in the fabrication and repair of metal structures such as refuse container, mechanical equipment, and related items. Paints equipment such as refuse containers and vehicles using brushes and spray guns. Performs general, daily housekeeping duties and maintains clean working environment and vehicles. Ability to be work successfully in extreme hot and/or extreme cold temperatures; excessive humidity; slippery and uneven walking surfaces, excessive noise, and other extreme conditions such as noxious fumes, moving heavy machinery, etc. Perform other duties as assigned and/or required.

Qualifications

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent plus specialized schooling or on-the-job training as mechanic. Must have a CDL Class A or B. Five years of experience as a mechanic or equivalent combination of education and training. The employee must constantly lift and/or move up to 65 pounds and occasionally may be asked to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Knowledge of diesel and gasoline equipment repair and preventative maintenance procedures. Knowledge of equipment operations, repair, maintenance techniques, and welding. Ability to maintain accurate records, type and enter data accurately. Ability to effectively communicate on a one-on-one basis with others. Ability to maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with other employees, department officials and the public. Ability to report to work each scheduled day, and on time. Must provide your own tools.
